{"id":278965,"date":"2021-06-19T18:30:38","date_gmt":"2021-06-19T15:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/maya-wiley-campaign-marred-by-evidence-of-her-wealth-and-elitism\/"},"modified":"2021-06-19T18:30:38","modified_gmt":"2021-06-19T15:30:38","slug":"maya-wiley-campaign-marred-by-evidence-of-her-wealth-and-elitism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/maya-wiley-campaign-marred-by-evidence-of-her-wealth-and-elitism\/","title":{"rendered":"#Maya Wiley campaign marred by evidence of her wealth and elitism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Maya Wiley campaign marred by evidence of her wealth and elitism<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>She\u2019s not Maya from the block.<\/p>\n<p>Maya Wiley has staked her claim to Gracie Mansion on unifying New Yorkers around her progressive bona fides and hard-bitten personal story. <\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s a tale that has often required looking past a number of silver spoons, and alleged hypocrisy, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Putting her own kids in selective city schools, and an elite private one, despite campaigning against what she calls \u201cracist\u201d academic screens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year as a \u201ccareer\u201d activist and lawyer for the de Blasio administration.<\/li>\n<li>Living in a multi-million home in an exclusive area of Brooklyn with private security, while advocating to defund the NYPD.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIt worries me,\u201d Shaquana Boykin, a Brooklyn district leader who is backing Dianne Morales in the mayor\u2019s race, told The Post. \u201cWealth and economic status changes everything. The home, built in 1905 by architect John J. Petit, has come in for fawning praise by elite connoisseurs. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike many larger Prairie School houses, this house sprawls in a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of wings,\u201d gushed <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brownstoner.com\/architecture\/building-of-the-day-1519-albemarle-road\/\">Brownstoner<\/a> in 2011. \u201cThe ground floor is laid in Roman brick, while the upper floors are clad in shingle siding. \u2026 Diamond paned windows, Jacobean carved strapwork, leaded transom windows, and the striking side oriels, with carved shields, garlands and putti all add to the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"Albemarle Road, the home of candidate for Mayor Maya Wiley. In the two years she worked as counsel for Mayor de Blasio between 2014 and 2016, Wiley raked in more than $400,000 in compensation, city records show. <\/p>\n<p>After leaving that job, Wiley <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newschool.edu\/pressroom\/pressreleases\/2016\/mayawiley.htm\">headed to the New School<\/a>, where she became a senior vice president for \u201csocial justice.\u201d Tax records show a nearly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.irs.gov\/pub\/epostcard\/cor\/133297197_201906_990_2021012817669046.pdf\">$300,000 payday<\/a> in 2018 and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.irs.gov\/pub\/epostcard\/cor\/133297197_202006_990_2021052518185884.pdf\">another $250,000<\/a> in 2019. I don\u2019t know what she accomplished,\u201d said Rudy Hinojosa, 27, who attended New School during Wiley\u2019s tenure. \u201cAs far as I knew she was either very behind the scenes, or just was a talking head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An MSNBC insider told The Post Wiley had attempted to weave the network into her campaign materials \u2014\u00a0which resulted in a tough \u201cconversation\u201d with the network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a feeling that she was using the MSNBC tag to get a larger liberal following in her materials,\u201d the source said. \u201cA discussion had to be had with her about distancing herself. She was abusing it essentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wiley\u2019s beau, Mandel, does well for himself as CEO of the Media Development Investment Fund, a self-described \u201cnot-for-profit investment fund.\u201d Mandel earned more than $900,000 in compensation between 2017 and 2019, tax records show.<\/p>\n<p>MDIF invests in the equity of debt of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>gathering organizations in countries including Poland, Brazil and South Africa. The organization received initial funding from George Soros and the billionaire\u2019s Open Society Foundations continue to support it. The MDIF did not respond to The Post\u2019s requests for its most recent IRS tax filing, which charities must disclose by law.<\/p>\n<p>From 1996 to 1998, Mandel worked as deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> counsel at the Open Society Foundations. Mango for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Later progressive organizations she was involved with \u2014 the Tides Foundation and the Center for Social Inclusion \u2014 were both bankrolled by Open Society grants, The Post has reported. As president of the Center for Social Inclusion, where she worked from 2002 to 2014, she was paid more than $180,000 in 2013, according to filings of that group.<\/p>\n<p>Wiley has also been dogged by questions of hypocrisy, failing to live up to her own standards, and being a limousine liberal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think definitely she fits that description pretty well,\u201d Sunkara said. <\/p>\n<p>Though she has called for slashing a billion dollars from the NYPD and has even declared herself open to the idea of taking their firearms away, Wiley and her tree-lined neighborhood are protected by private security. The protection is paid for from the Prospect Park South Charitable Trust \u2014 which Mandel has contributed to. <\/p>\n<p>The security, which patrols the area at night, is very helpful for shooing away pesky drunks and others undesirables, neighbors said.
