{"id":279544,"date":"2021-06-21T04:36:50","date_gmt":"2021-06-21T01:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/gypsy-moth-caterpillars-rain-poop-down-on-upstate-ny\/"},"modified":"2021-06-21T04:36:50","modified_gmt":"2021-06-21T01:36:50","slug":"gypsy-moth-caterpillars-rain-poop-down-on-upstate-ny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/gypsy-moth-caterpillars-rain-poop-down-on-upstate-ny\/","title":{"rendered":"#Gypsy moth caterpillars rain poop down on upstate NY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Gypsy moth caterpillars rain poop down on upstate NY<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Caterpillars from a species that has exploded in population in upstate New York are gorging on tree leaves and showering excrement onto residential yards, according to residents from the region.<\/p>\n<p>The invasive bug is in the midst of a population boom and the creatures in larva stage are out in numbers not seen in over a decade, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> reports and advisories from the Department of Environmental Conservation.<\/p>\n<p>Schuyler County resident Shannan Warick <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/news\/2021\/06\/gypsy-moth-caterpillars-in-upstate-ny-strip-trees-rain-poop-the-stuff-that-nightmares-are-made-of.html\">told Syracuse.com she moved her outdoor furniture<\/a> away from caterpillar-infested trees \u2013 and the larva\u2019s droppings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sounds like it\u2019s raining in the backyard,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The little buggers have torn through leafy trees like oaks and moved on to pines and needles to the point where some locals say entire forests have been drained of green. Dwight Relation, owner of Rockwood Maples in West Chazy, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pressrepublican.com\/news\/gypsy-moths-damaging-trees-around-area\/article_c094a670-d085-11eb-b828-cba63b4b9eec.html\">told the Press-Republican the caterpillars de-leafed his oaks<\/a>, pines and white birches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey just kept eating and eating and eating,\u201d Relation told the paper, which compared the property to a scene out of Hitchcock or Kafka.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no green vegetation at all,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pressrepublican.com\/news\/gypsy-moths-damaging-trees-around-area\/article_c094a670-d085-11eb-b828-cba63b4b9eec.html\">he added<\/a>. \u201cEverything\u2019s gone. It almost looks like it got hit with a nuke \u2026 like a chemical, and it just killed everything in sight for hundreds of yards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recommends scraping egg masses off of trees or drowning caterpillars in soapy water \u2013 but warns against touching them because the hairs on their back can cause skin irritation.<\/p>\n<p>Their eggs alone can be a nuisance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGypsy moth will lay its egg masses on anything outdoors, it doesn\u2019t have to be trees,\u201d DEC Forester Rob Cole said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NYSDEC\/videos\/835260287412866\">during a Facebook Live on the outbreak<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"still small caterpillar of the sponge moth on the leaf of a red oak\" class=\"wp-image-18584750 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/gypsy-moth.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/gypsy-moth.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/gypsy-moth.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/gypsy-moth.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/gypsy-moth.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation warns against touching the gypsy moth caterpillars.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Sebastian Willnow\/picture alliance via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll lay egg masses on the side of your house, on your outdoor equipment, on your patio furniture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Koetzle, supervisor of the town of Glenville, told <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> 10 ABC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news10.com\/news\/residents-concerned-over-severe-gypsy-moth-infestation\/\">he feels \u201cstuck\u201d without a lot of answers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re talking about individually drowning the caterpillar \u2013 which there are millions of them \u2013 so that\u2019s not really practical,\u201d Koetzle said.<\/p>\n<p>The caterpillars are likely to become moths in July, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dec.ny.gov\/animals\/83118.html\">according to the DEC<\/a>. The outbreaks come can last about two or three years, the agency stated<\/p>\n<p>Gypsy Moths were brought from Europe in the 1800s by an entrepreneur looking to increase silk production, Cole stated.
