Anyone who\u2019s ever been to New York City knows Central Park is a great place to visit. But the enchantingly tuneful and sweet-souled animated comedy Central Park<\/em><\/a>, now in its second season (and already renewed for a third), will make you want to live there. As long as you can bunk with the Tillermans, the endearingly eccentric family that occupies an on-site castle while devoted dad Owen (Hamilton<\/i><\/a>\u2019s Leslie Odom Jr.<\/a>) tends to the sprawling grounds.<\/p>\n

Peering through their windows as he keeps us breathlessly abreast of the family\u2019s activities and what\u2019s up with those who are plotting against them, is the overeager and bumbling busker Birdie (Frozen<\/i>\u2019s Josh Gad<\/a>, who cocreated the series<\/a> with Bob\u2019s Burgers<\/i> <\/a>veterans). He sets the magically whimsical tone for a show that specializes in anthems of self-acceptance: \u201cYou\u2019re never alone if the back that you\u2019ve got is your own,\u201d learns young Molly (Emmy Raver-Lampman, replacing Kristen Bell<\/a>), a budding cartoonist who tolerates her sensitive kid brother, Cole (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/i><\/a>\u2019s Tituss Burgess<\/a>), and tries to live up to the example of her competitive reporter mom, Paige (WandaVision<\/i><\/a>\u2019s Kathryn Hahn<\/a>).<\/p>\n

With multiple original songs per episode \u2014 contributors this season include They Might Be Giants, Rufus Wainwright and Hedwig and the Angry Inch<\/i>\u2019s John Cameron Mitchell<\/a> \u2014 Central Park<\/i> is the most creative TV musical since Crazy Ex-Girlfriend<\/i>,<\/a> and sometimes just as surprising.<\/p>\n

Mere minutes into the new season, Hamilton<\/i>\u2019s Daveed Diggs<\/a> delivers a hilariously infectious rap extolling the virtues of suburban Weehawken, New Jersey (\u201cLivin\u2019 high upon the Palisades, everybody be flockin\u2019 to Weehawken\u201d). It\u2019s a rare upbeat moment for his character of the wraithlike Helen, deadpan assistant to the show\u2019s archnemesis, Bitsy Brandenham (Stanley Tucci<\/a>, a riot).<\/p>\n

This toxic high-society troll, who\u2019s half bouffant and all venom, has a twisted dream: to purchase, privatize and monetize Central Park, displacing the too-good-for-their-own-good Tillermans as a bonus. We know this grotesque Grinch will never succeed, but it\u2019s a hoot watching her try.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s even more of a blast to listen for guest voices: TV veterans (Henry Winkler<\/a>, Ed Asner<\/a>), Broadway greats (Patti LuPone<\/a>) and rising talents (Amber Ruffin<\/a>). Who can blame them for wanting to get in on the fun?<\/p>\n
