A Long Island resident found an 8-foot snake slithering in her driveway \u2014 initially thinking it was a hose she forgot to stow away.<\/p>\n

Frances Hughes made the shocking discovery outside her Deer Park home around 9 a.m. Sunday, according to Suffolk County police.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething caught my eye and I\u2019m like, \u2018I thought I put the hose away.\u2019 And it wasn\u2019t the hose,\u201d Hughes told News12<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hughes called 911 and two officers wrangled the snake by containing it in a trash bin.<\/p>\n

Police identified the beast as a boa constrictor, but animal experts believe that it\u2019s actually a Burmese python based on photos, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n

The dangerous snakes are invasive to Long Island and illegal to own as pets in New York state.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of scary to me that someone had that and that it escaped,\u201d Hughes said.<\/p>\n

Neighbors also said they were concerned now for their pets, fearing that their animals could become prey if there are others on the loose.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a little 10-pound dog and I am going to keep him in the house for now,\u201d neighbor Paula Palumbo told the outlet.<\/p>\n

Police said the snake is in the care of the\u00a0Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
