The term struck a sour note. <\/p>\n

UK celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has announced that he will stop using the name \u201ckaffir lime leaves\u201d in his recipe books and on TV shows due to concerns over the word\u2019s racist connotations. <\/p>\n

Oliver, 46, has already scrubbed the fraught moniker from his online recipe for quick chicken laksa, while the TV cook\u2019s team plans to review and edit prior content where the term was used, the Daily Mail reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can confirm that we\u2019re also making the change \u2014 to lime leaves \u2014 and won\u2019t be using the term going forward,\u201d a source close to the \u201cOliver\u2019s Twist\u201d host told the publication in a statement. <\/p>\n

Derived from the Southeast Asian citrus hystrix plant, kaffir lime leaves<\/a> are a popular ingredient in everything from Indonesian traditional medicine<\/a> to Thai coconut curry, to which they add a dash of zest. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the name\u2019s origins are less than savory: \u201cKaffir\u201d is a highly offensive slur that was historically used to refer to black people, particularly in South Africa<\/a> during the Apartheid era of the 20th century. Today, calling someone the k-word<\/a> there can potentially land a person in jail. <\/p>\n

In order to avoid reheating racial tensions, Oliver plans to replace \u201ckaffir lime leaves\u201d with just \u201clime leaves\u201d going forward. The celebrity chef\u2019s decision comes after Tesco, Waitrose and other UK chains banned the use of the word<\/a> on their products.<\/p>\n

The limes aren\u2019t the only foodstuffs receiving a makeover in the name of racial harmony. On this side of the pond, snack brands from Uncle Ben\u2019s to Aunt Jemima have overhauled their controversial imagery to promote equality following the police killings of George Floyd and other black individuals.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
