Why am I being offered Moderna for the second?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                            Experts say the two mRNA vaccines are interchangeable as millions of doses of both Pfizer and Moderna arrive in Canada\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine records are tumbling almost daily. On June 18, 532,000 shots were put into arms in Canada, according to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19tracker.ca\/vaccinationtracker.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data collected by COVID-19 Tracker Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ontario was averaging 175,000 doses a day at the beginning of last week; as of June 21, that had climbed to 190,000 doses a day as another 2.3 million people in the province became eligible for second doses, according to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatriciaTreble\/status\/1406691130784235525?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data requested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maclean\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the Ministry of Health. On Sunday, June 27, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/home\/covid-19\/covid-19-protect-yourself-others\/covid-19-vaccines\/covid-19-how-to-get-vaccinated\/?accordion=toronto-vaccine-day-at-scotiabank-arena\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto is marking Vaccine Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by opening a huge clinic at Scotiabank Arena, home to the Maple Leafs and Raptors. The aim: to set a one-day record for the most shots administered at one clinic. And most of those doses will be Moderna.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of a hiccup in the delivery of Pfizer doses\u2014this week\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/canada-to-get-5-2m-covid-19-vaccine-doses-this-week-pfizer-shipment-slightly-delayed-1.5478701\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shipment of 2.4 million doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is delayed until the middle of the week\u2014the city, like many other jurisdictions, is reserving its Pfizer supplies to youths ages 12 to 17, as it is the only <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved vaccine for that age cohort.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health experts and authorities across the country have approved Moderna as a second dose if your first was AstraZeneca or Pfizer. Last week, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/immunization\/national-advisory-committee-on-immunization-naci\/recommendations-use-covid-19-vaccines\/summary-statement-june-17-2021.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">updated its second dose guidance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: for those who first received AstraZeneca, it recommends getting a mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as the second dose because of the continued risk of rare blood clots with AstraZeneca as well as \u201ce<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">merging evidence suggesting better immune responses\u201d from mixing and matching with a second dose of mRNA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Fully vaccinated people have gotten the Delta COVID variant. Should we be worried?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, NACI reiterated its second dose recommendation for those whose first shot was a mRNA vaccine: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf the same product is not readily available, or the product used for the first dose is unknown, another mRNA vaccine is considered interchangeable and should be used to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past few days, experts have explained to any hesitant second-dosers that Moderna and Pfizer are virtually indistinguishable and have similar efficacy against COVID-19 (in fact, one dose of Moderna is <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrJeffKwong\/status\/1406685517584941064?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at preventing infection than a single dose of Pfizer). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth Pfizer and Moderna are mRNA vaccines. They\u2019re not identical but extremely similar and it\u2019s perfectly okay to get one dose of each,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CMOH_Alberta\/status\/1407010541441196036?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained Dr. Deena Hinshaw<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Alberta\u2019s chief medical officer of health. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Manitoba government site concurred: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults are \u201creminded that they do not need to wait for a Pfizer for second-dose appointments, and may get Moderna if it is available to them earlier. Pfizer and Moderna are both safe, effective and interchangeable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Pfizer hiccup notwithstanding, <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of doses are arriving in Canada. <\/span>Last week, three separate deliveries brought nearly seven million doses of Moderna vaccine into the country, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Procurement Canada. And that\u2019s not all: an additional 2.4 million doses of Pfizer and 2.8 million doses of Moderna will arrive this week, according to data from Procurement Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of June, Canada is expected to have received a cumulative total of more than 50 million doses since the first shipment arrived in December, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 29 million doses of Pfizer\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 20 million doses of Moderna\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and 2.9 million doses of AstraZeneca<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0These happy data warriors do a better job charting the pandemic than your government<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The federal government has announced that another 9.1 million Pfizer and 6.6 million Moderna doses will arrive in July, pushing the cumulative total as of July 31 to more than 68 million doses. This means there will be more than enough to fully vaccinate all eligible Canadians (around 32 million people in Canada<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are 12 and older).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, demand for second doses is surging. Like Ontario<\/span> and other provinces, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manitoba is <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.mb.ca\/covid19\/vaccine\/eligibility-criteria.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasing eligibility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As of today,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anyone who got a first dose on or before May 25 can get a second shot. On Tuesday, that expands to those who were vaccinated <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.mb.ca\/covid19\/vaccine\/eligibility-criteria.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on or before May 29<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you keep giving the provinces more doses, they just speed up more,\u201d says <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WilsonKM2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kevin Wilson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Halifax-based epidemiologist who has spent the past few months analyzing the vaccine distribution and administration system in Canada. \u201cNo one is sitting on a mountain of vaccines wondering how to get rid of them.\u201d Vaccines end up in arms within a week or two of arriving in a given province or territory, says Wilson, depending on the delivery cycle.
