Several NFL players voiced their support for Carl Nassib on Monday after the Raiders defensive end became the first active player to come out as gay.<\/p>\n

At least two of Nassib\u2019s teammates publicly supported him following the historic announcement, a moment the 28-year-old said he had \u201cagonized\u201d over for the past 15 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cProud of you brotha,\u201d Raiders\u2019 rookie defensive tackle Darius Stills wrote on social media<\/a>, while Solomon Thomas, acquired by the Raiders this past offseason, wrote the same.<\/p>\n

Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said, \u201cI learned a long time ago what makes a man different is what makes him great,\u201d according to ESPN.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Roger Goodell said the NFL is \u201cproud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today. \u2026 We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be news<\/a>worthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nassib said he \u201cwould not be able\u201d to go through with his announcement without his coaches, teammates and other players.<\/p>\n

A few NFL players have come out as gay prior to Nassib, but only after their respective playing days ended.<\/p>\n

Roy Simmons, who spent four seasons with the Giants and Washington in the early 1980s, told the New York Times in 2003<\/a> he didn\u2019t come out during his playing days because he feared it would end his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NFL has a reputation,\u201d he said, \u201cand it\u2019s not even a verbal thing \u2014 it\u2019s just known. You are gladiators; you are male; you kick butt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simmons\u2019 teammate with the Giants, Butch Woolfolk, told the newspaper: \u201cYou can be a wife beater, do drugs, get in a car wreck and the team will take care of you. But if you\u2019re gay, it\u2019s like the military: Don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before being drafted by the Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 draft, Missouri star Michael Sam came out as gay, and was on track to become the first openly gay active player in the league.<\/p>\n

But Sam, who famously was filmed kissing his boyfriend on draft night, was cut at the end of training camp, which the team said was strictly a football decision. He retired a year later because of what he described as mental health reasons.<\/p>\n

The support for Nassib has been more widespread than what Sam received, as acceptance of the LGBTQ community continues to grow. <\/p>\n

Following Nassib\u2019s announcement, Giants star running back Saquon Barkley tweeted, \u201cMuch respect brudda.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nassib\u2019s brother Ryan, who spent two seasons with the Giants, wrote on Instagram, \u201cCouldn\u2019t be more proud to be your brother. Love you Carl.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nassib is entering his sixth year in the league, having also played for the Browns, who selected him in the third in the 2016 NFL Draft, and the Buccaneers.<\/p>\n

The Raiders signed Nassib, who has 20.5 career sacks, to a three-year, $25 million contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongrats to Carl Nassib on coming out that\u2019s a big step,\u201d former NFL star Shawne Merriman wrote. \u201cI think that most players are concerned if you can play or not.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
