nearly identical declines in bookings as cooped-up Americans quarantined at home, but new research suggests that airlines are having more difficulty mounting a recovery.<\/p>\n<p> But as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted with more vaccinated Americans feeling comfortable about <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing, airlines are experiencing a slow recovery, according to data from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.adobe.com\/en\/publish\/2021\/06\/21\/adobe-digital-economy-index-hotel-reservations-surpass-pre-pandemic-levels-growth-in-flight-bookings-slows.html#gs.3wt69b\" class=\"icon none\">Adobe Digital Economy Index<\/a> published Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       \u201cAfter a year where travel virtually came to a standstill overnight, all eyes are on the airline and hotel industry,\u201d the researchers wrote. \u201cAn increase in vaccinations and consumer confidence have unleashed some pent-up demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        \u2018An increase in vaccinations and consumer confidence have unleashed some pent-up demand.\u2019<br \/>\n        <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       In May, Americans spent over $5 billion on domestic flights, according to Adobe Analytics<br \/>\n        ADBE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200389143\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.31%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span><br \/>\n       That\u2019s down 4% on the month, and down 20% from May 2019. (Most Americans stayed home in 2020 during the peak of the pandemic.)<\/p>\n<p> The Adobe Analytics report analyzed transactions from 6 of the top 10 U.S. airlines, and 8 of the top 10 U.S hotels, an analysis that comprised \u201c150 billion visits to travel, leisure and hospitality sites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While hotels are keen to lure people back in the face of stiff competition from Airbnb ABNB, airfares rose by 17% over April and May from March this year, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index data.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, some 29% of people polled don\u2019t feel safe flying due to being in close proximity with other travelers and the risk of catching the coronavirus, Adobe said. While more than half (57%) said they\u2019d feel safe staying at a hotel.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lack_of_business_travelers\"><\/span>Lack of business travelers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The industry\u2019s financial performance will be more varied this year than we expected in December, the International Air Transport Association\u00a0said, citing \u201cdifficulties in controlling the virus variants and slower vaccination in some regions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLarge airlines have raised sufficient cash to cover this already. Many smaller airlines haven\u2019t and will need government aid or to raise more cash from the banks or capital markets \u2014 adding to the industry\u2019s debt burden,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/en\/iata-repository\/publications\/economic-reports\/airline-industry-economic-performance---april-2021---report\/\" class=\"icon none\">IATA added<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some airlines have cut flights to cope with the the economics of scale involved in flying planes that are not near full. American Airlines<br \/>\n        AAL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209207041\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.72%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       said on Sunday it will scrap 1% of planned flying in the first half of July or about 950 flights.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        \u2018Large airlines have raised sufficient cash to cover this already. Hence why consumers are spending less money on flights even as pandemic-record levels of Americans fly.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, 2.1 million Americans were screened by the Transportation Security Administration, a single-day pandemic record number of passengers, according to federal data. That\u2019s 600,000 fewer travelers compared to June 20, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Another factor contributing to the disparity between hotel bookings and flights is that business travel hasn\u2019t bounced back. Only 11% of U.S. consumers plan to travel for business in the next six months, according to an Adobe survey of 1,000 people. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lack of business travel \u2014 as companies take a careful approach to re-opening \u2014 and lingering consumer hesitation are prolonging the road to recovery,\u201d the Adobe Analytics report states.<\/p>\n<p>Major U.S. airlines, including legacy carriers such as American Airlines\u00a0and United Airlines Holdings Inc.\u00a0<br \/>\n        UAL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205037281\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.40%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and relative newcomers such as JetBlue Airways Corp.\u00a0<br \/>\n        JBLU,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207639051\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.96%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       are chasing that same, narrow segment of customers.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, they got saddled with debt to remain afloat during the pandemic and face structural headwinds, with concerns about inflation and rising fuel prices.
