{"id":280610,"date":"2021-06-22T12:00:01","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T09:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/aviations-contribution-to-cutting-climate-change-likely-to-be-small\/"},"modified":"2021-06-22T12:00:01","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T09:00:01","slug":"aviations-contribution-to-cutting-climate-change-likely-to-be-small","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/aviations-contribution-to-cutting-climate-change-likely-to-be-small\/","title":{"rendered":"#Aviation&#8217;s contribution to cutting climate change likely to be small"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Aviation&#8217;s contribution to cutting climate change likely to be small<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2021\/aviation.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/hires\/2021\/aviation.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Credit: Unsplash\/CC0 Public Domain\">\n<figure class=\"article-img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2021\/aviation.jpg\" alt=\"aviation\" title=\"Credit: Unsplash\/CC0 Public Domain\" width=\"800\" height=\"529\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-darken text-low-up text-truncate-js text-truncate mt-3\">\n                Credit: Unsplash\/CC0 Public Domain<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Although the emissions targets for aviation are in line with the overall goals of the Paris Agreement, there is a high likelihood that the climate impact of aviation will not meet these goals, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner ads-336x280\"><!-- \/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box --><br \/>\n      <\/section>\n<p>Aviation is an important contributor to the global economy, but contributes to climate change by creating carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) as well as non-CO<sub>2<\/sub> effects such as forming nitrogen oxides, ozone and contrailcirrus clouds, which all contribute to global warming.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers believe that, as long as the industry stages a recovery, the restrictions placed on global air <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> in response to COVID-19 lockdown will only have a temporary effect on the overall climate impact of aviation.<\/p>\n<p>Publishing their findings today in <i>Nature Communications<\/i>, an international research team including experts from the University of Birmingham believes that non-CO<sub>2<\/sub> effects will continue to make a major contribution to aviation&#8217;s climate impact over the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>However, these effects are not included in the International Civil Aviation Organisation&#8217;s (ICAO) goal of climate neutral growth and only partly addressed in Flightpath 2050\u2014the European Commission&#8217;s vision for aviation.<\/p>\n<p>Although Flightpath 2050 emissions goals are likely to stabilize aviation&#8217;s climate impact and ICAO&#8217;s offsetting scheme CORSIA will surpass the climate target set to support the Paris Agreement&#8217;s 1.5 \u00b0C goal between 2025 and 2064, the researchers warn that an increasing aviation-induced global warming effect is likely despite the implementation of a range of mitigation options within the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Study co-author Dr. Simon Blakey, Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, at the University of Birmingham, commented: &#8220;Technological improvements to engines and airframes and operations won&#8217;t be enough to sufficiently reduce the impact of aviation on climate change. We must explore all mitigation options in parallel\u2014including the increased use of sustainable fuels and market based measures in order to limit aviation&#8217;s impact on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accounting for sustainable fuels must include the impact of non-CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions in use as well as the CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions in fuel production. If we base all our calculations on CO<sub>2<\/sub> alone, we miss the large improvements in non-CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions that these fuels can offer, particularly in reducing particulate matter emissions which contribute to an increased warming effect at cruise conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is currently significant interest in policies, regulations and research aiming to reduce aviation&#8217;s climate impact.
