{"id":280620,"date":"2021-06-22T13:23:31","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T10:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/teslas-new-supercomputer-is-to-blame-for-its-autopilot-tech-switch\/"},"modified":"2021-06-22T13:23:31","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T10:23:31","slug":"teslas-new-supercomputer-is-to-blame-for-its-autopilot-tech-switch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/teslas-new-supercomputer-is-to-blame-for-its-autopilot-tech-switch\/","title":{"rendered":"#Tesla&#8217;s new supercomputer is to blame for its Autopilot tech switch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Tesla&#8217;s new supercomputer is to blame for its Autopilot tech switch<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>Tesla announced last month that it\u2019s ditching radar sensors f<span>rom its Model 3 and Model Y EVs\u00a0<\/span>for a camera-based autonomous driving system, called the Tesla Vision\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<span>but just for the North American market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u2019s move made absolutely no sense and it even cost the company the safety recognition by the\u00a0<span>National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).\u00a0<\/span>But new details from the company\u2019s Senior Director of Artificial Intelligence, Andrej Karpathy, shed at least some light into the automaker\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n<p>During his presentation at\u00a0<span>the 2021 Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition on Monday, Karpathy revealed that the reason behind the vision-only autonomous driving <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach is the company\u2019s new supercomputer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tesla\u2019s next-gen supercomputer has 10 petabytes of \u201chot tier\u201d NVMe storage and runs at 1.6 terrabytes per second, according to Karpathy. So I wanted to give a plug to this insane supercomputer that we are building and using now. For us, computer vision is the bread and butter of what we do and what enables Autopilot. And for that to work really well, we need to master the data from the fleet, and train massive neural nets and experiment a lot. So we invested a lot into the computer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The supercomputer collects video from eight cameras encircling the vehicle at 36 frames per second, which provides tremendous amounts of information about the environment surrounding the car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk has been teasing\u00a0<span>a neural network training computer called \u201cDojo\u201d for some time now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Dojo, our training supercomputer, will be able to process vast amounts of video training data &amp; efficiently run hypersparce arrays with a vast number of parameters, plenty of memory &amp; ultra-high bandwidth between cores. More on this later.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1224050025564725248?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But Tesla\u2019s new supercomputer isn\u2019t Dojo, just an evolutionary step towards it, and Karpathy didn\u2019t want to elaborate on the company\u2019s ultimate computer project.<\/p>\n<p><span>Overall, we can now grasp better why Tesla turned to a camera-based system for its Autopilot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But even though the supercomputer\u2019s abilities are impressive, I feel that the company took a big leap of faith, given that the neural network which collects and analyzes image data is still in an experimental\u00a0stage.
