The Washington Post is being blasted for \u201cpromulgating ignorant neoracist nonsense\u201d for posting a podcast video in which experts encouraged white people to create \u201caccountability groups\u201d \u2014 in order to go through a \u201cperiod of deep shame.\u201d<\/p>\n

The paper released the video on Friday as part of its \u201cThe New Normal\u201d<\/a> series<\/a> in a segment titled \u201cWhat is White Racial Identity and Why Is It Important?\u201d<\/p>\n

In the episode, several mental health experts and scholars discussed \u201cunderstanding your whiteness and the ways that white supremacy benefits you,\u201d Fox News reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One of the ways they suggested to \u201cunderstand whiteness\u201d included joining or creating \u201cwhite accountability groups,\u201d according to the news<\/a> outlet.<\/p>\n

Resmaa Menakem, an author and trauma specialist, said: \u201c[A]n antiracist culture does not exist among white people. White people need to start getting together specifically around race.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that such groups could have to meet over several years to end up with a community \u201caligned with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rebecca Toporek, a professor in the Department of Counseling at San Francisco State University, said accountability groups \u201care really helpful in terms of having a place to process, having a group of people whose responsibility it is to call me on things, or to challenge me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Texas-based trauma counselor Ilyse Kennedy added that whites needed a \u201cperiod of deep shame for being white and for acknowledging the harm that our ancestors have caused,\u201d Fox News reported.<\/p>\n

The podcast also insisted that no matter how much effort is put into being \u201canti-racist,\u201d there is no end to white accountability \u2014 and an Oklahoma woman featured in the video said: \u201cNo matter how much you work on that, there\u2019s still almost even more work to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe New Normal\u201d host Nicole Ellis, who introduced the video by saying it is about \u201cwhite racial identity,\u201d said George Floyd\u2019s death marked the \u201cfirst time that white people were becoming aware of their whiteness \u2014 and the systemic ways that white supremacy affects all of us,\u201d the Post Millennial reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Menakem said: \u201cRacism, racialism, white body supremacy is not episodic, it is structural.\u201d<\/p>\n

The psychotherapist\u00a0\u2014 who wrote \u201cMy Grandmother\u2019s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending our Hearts and Bodies\u201d \u2014 added: \u201cRemember that there were thousands of George Floyds before the one that you say. Your bodily response to this horror, right, is not the same thing as you dealing with the structural aspects of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toporek said that \u201cwhite people in particular get aroused, get upset, say \u2018This is unjust, this isn\u2019t right, this shouldn\u2019t happ<\/a>en.\u2019 There\u2019s like an awakening that happens. And so part of their racial identity development is seeing that awakening. What they do with it is really the next piece of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She explained that \u201cexploring white racial identity\u201d is in fact \u201ca life-long process.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the structure of racism \u2026 is to keep us from recognizing that racism is part of our daily lives,\u201d Toporek said, the Post Millennial reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s a longer term process of looking at your understanding of yourself in the world, both historically but also contextually. Also the family you live in, the community you live in, and what role whiteness plays in that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The video was lambasted in social media<\/a>, where users assailed its blatant attack on white people \u2013 with many mentioning that the content resembled a kind of \u201creligion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWashington Post urges white people to feel \u2018shame,\u2019 to self-segregate into \u2018white accountability groups,\u2019\u201d right wing Malaysian commentator Ian Miles Chong said in a tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Christopher Rufo, a senior fellow at the conservative think-tank the Manhattan Institute, wrote<\/a>: \u201cIt all makes sense now: the Washington Post published a 3,000-word fake hitpiece against me because they really want to defend race essentialism and \u2018White racial identity.\u2019<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI\u2019m fighting against race supremacy; the Washington Post wants to install it everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a separate tweet, he wrote<\/a>: \u201cThe game<\/a> is that they want to create an essentialized racial category (\u2018whiteness\u2019), load it with negative connotations, then impose it on individuals through guilt, shame, and school indoctrination. This approach is reductive, manipulative, and malicious. Don\u2019t fall for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rufo urged people to not \u201clet institutions like the Washington Post manufacture racism, divide us from one another, and tear this country apart. The elites want to move us into racial retrograde. It\u2019s up to us to fight back, build a shared culture, and unite around a common purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brooklyn-based journalist Jesse Singal called it a \u201cvery strange pseudoreligious movement that is likely to do more harm than good.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said in a tweet<\/a> that \u201cone of the WaPo sources is Resmaa Menakem, a proponent of Somatic Abolitionism, which holds that \u2018Nearly all our bodies \u2014 bodies of all colors \u2014 are infected by the virus of white-body supremacy.\u2019<\/p>\n
