“#’Jeopardy!’ Apologizes for Using an Inaccurate Term in a Recent Clue<\/strong>”

Jeopardy!<\/em> is issuing an apology to viewers following one of its recent episodes during which an outdated term was used to describe Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.<\/p>\n

In the episode helmed by guest host Savannah Guthrie, contestants were faced with a medical category that included a not-so-accurate clue. The clue in question reads: \u201cPostural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome is also known as Grinch Syndrome because this organ is too small,\u201d and the correct question response was \u201cWhat is the heart?\u201d<\/p>\n

Many viewers and medical experts took to the internet following the episode to note that the clue isn\u2019t entirely true and the term \u201cGrinch Syndrome\u201d is not a term used in today\u2019s vernacular.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had POTS for 13+ years,\u201d Twitter<\/a> user @lillielainoff wrote<\/a>. \u201cI have been to countless doctors, specialists, clinics, hospitals, etc. Not once have I heard the term \u2018Grinch Syndrome.\u2019 Not until it was the descript<\/a>ion for my condition on <\/span>@Jeopardy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Yesterday\u2019s program included a clue about postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). After hearing from the community, we found we used an outdated and inaccurate term for this disorder, and we apologize.<\/p>\n

Since then, Jeopardy!<\/em> has followed up the fan responses with an apology. \u201cYesterday\u2019s program included a clue about postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS),\u201d the Twitter statement began<\/a>. \u201cAfter hearing from the community, we found we used an outdated and inaccurate term for this disorder, and we apologize.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Some viewers pointed out that POTS doesn\u2019t have anything to do with heart size, and is tied to the nervous system. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/a>, POTS is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system which is tied to heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, and body temperature. Symptoms of POTS commonly include an increased heart rate when standing.<\/p>\n
