{"id":281308,"date":"2021-06-23T02:09:41","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T23:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/tribune-slashes-pages-20-percent-sets-early-deadlines\/"},"modified":"2021-06-23T02:09:41","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T23:09:41","slug":"tribune-slashes-pages-20-percent-sets-early-deadlines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/tribune-slashes-pages-20-percent-sets-early-deadlines\/","title":{"rendered":"#Tribune slashes pages 20 percent, sets early deadlines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Tribune slashes pages 20 percent, sets early deadlines<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Tribune Publishing\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>papers including the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune this week found out what a new round of staffing cuts will mean for deadlines and the size of their papers \u2014 and the operative word, as elsewhere, is \u201ctight.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In a Sunday e-mail from the Chicago-based Design Production Studio obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Ink, the company said that all papers must slash local and feature pages by 20 percent, move up their deadlines by as much as two hours and that most of the special sections should be put on \u201cpause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s despite the fact that Tribune\u2019s papers have already gone through several rounds of painful cuts. The copyediting and design of the Daily News, for example, has been operating out of Chicago for the past two years. <\/p>\n<p>And if local editors thought they could rely on wire copy to fill empty pages, that\u2019s likewise being curtailed. \u201cLocal markets stop pulling their own national wire stories and better utilize existing mods,\u201d read the directive.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s memo came two days after dozens of employees opted to take advantage of the voluntary buyouts pushed by cost-slashing hedge fund Alden Global Capital. No official estimate on the number of buyouts was available but one source estimated it was close to 100 people nationally. <\/p>\n<p>Alden, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/03\/24\/hedge-fund-vampire-buys-luxury-hamptons-resort-for-near-20-million\/?_ga=2.235490305.160745660.1624372956-1518157838.1624372956\">headed by Heath Freeman<\/a>, took over Tribune publishing last month in a deal valued at $633 million. The New York-based investor began moving for editorial buyouts within days of the takeover and the deadline to accept the offers was June 16. I wasn\u2019t going to let it die,\u201d Hutzell wrote. \u201cI wish I could say it\u2019s all been grand and I\u2019m headed off to retirement, but it hasn\u2019t and I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the Chicago NewsGuild, union rep Greg Pratt <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/royalpratt\/status\/1405693097443565569\">tweeted that 26 Guild members<\/a> had taken advantage of the buyout, which of course would not have included non-union editorial management types. Sources said that at the Hartford Courant, eight people opted out. <\/p>\n<p>The NewsGuild, which represents eight of the nine major metro dailies, said Tribune accepted 65 buyouts of unionized members. That included 24 at the Chicago Guild and eight buyouts at the Daily News. That number does not include non-management Guild people or the South Florida Sun Sentinel, which is the only non-unionized metro daily in the company.<\/p>\n<p>It is now estimated that the total estimate number of buyouts came to just under 100 people.
