“#Bryson DeChambeau\u2019s awkward compliment puts Tiger Woods in the past<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n DUBLIN, Ohio \u2014 Everyone wants a glimpse.<\/p>\n

Even Tiger Woods.<\/p>\n

Wednesday was Tiger\u2019s turn to take an up-close-and-personal look at the phenomenon that is Bryson DeChambeau, he of the 25 pounds of added muscle and otherworldly length.<\/p>\n

Until his arrival this week, Woods had been away from the PGA Tour since its COVID-19 re-start, so he\u2019d been reduced to watching the new Bryson the same way most of the world has: on television.<\/p>\n

Woods and DeChambeau played together in a practice round Wednesday morning at Muirfield Village Golf Club in advance of Thursday\u2019s opening round of the Memorial. DeChambeau revealed that he was the one who actually initiated the pairing, which lasted for the front nine.<\/p>\n

As you might expect, it was fun theater.<\/p>\n

And then, after it was over, DeChambeau, while heaping praise on Woods, unwittingly went to a place where few have dared to go with a couple comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in the day, he was it,\u2019\u2019 DeChambeau said. \u201cHe was the golden star. He was the one everybody looked up to.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

While DeChambeau meant nothing but to be complimentary of Woods, it was impossible not to notice the past tense in his sentences.<\/p>\n

Then there was this:<\/p>\n

\u201cEven now, he\u2019s hitting it pretty long,\u2019\u2019 DeChambeau said. \u201cThere were a couple holes he hit 320, 325 [yards]. I\u2019m like, that\u2019s pretty good for his age. It\u2019s amazing for his age.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Yes, DeChambeau went there: \u201cFor his age.\u2019\u2019 Though intending nothing but reverence and not an ounce of disrespect, his words dripped with unintended patronization.<\/p>\n

Woods, 44, didn\u2019t hit his first driver of the round until the sixth hole, and DeChambeau\u2019s drive landed 50 yards past Woods\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never imagined that I\u2019d be even hitting it this far,\u2019\u2019 DeChambeau, 26, said.<\/p>\n

Woods, in a brief interview after the practice round, said DeChambeau \u201chit a couple good [drives], but nothing that he stepped on because the front nine doesn\u2019t really allow it.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Woods praised DeChambeau\u2019s transformation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Bryson has done is no easy task,\u2019\u2019 Woods said. \u201cHe\u2019s put in the time and has put in the reps and he\u2019s figured it out. He\u2019s gotten stronger, faster, bigger, and has created more speed. But more importantly, he\u2019s hitting it further. But let\u2019s look at the fact that he\u2019s hitting it as straight as he is. That\u2019s part of the most difficult thing to do.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

DeChambeau has been the talk of the PGA Tour since its restart and he has become a lightning rod.<\/p>\n

Most competitors have been complimentary, but some have tweaked him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like if I\u2019m playing my game<\/a>, he can hit it as far as he wants to and I don\u2019t think he\u2019s going to beat me,\u2019\u2019 Dustin Johnson said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went from kind of being a little skeptical about it to maybe saying some things to realizing he was beating me every week and I should probably shut up and just start playing better for myself,\u2019\u2019 Justin Thomas said last week. \u201cPeople don\u2019t understand how hard it is to hit it that straight at that high speed. It\u2019s pretty unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patrick Cantlay, the defending Memorial champion who\u2019s paired with DeChambeau for the first two rounds, joked, \u201cI\u2019ll expect to play at least second most of the time coming in from the fairway. I\u2019m expecting [DeChambeau] to hit it really far.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

He will.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if guys that are currently on Tour will go to the lengths that he\u2019s gone to try and get the distance, but I do think that there\u2019s a lot of young kids watching that are maybe in high school or even in college or junior golf that are thinking to themselves, \u2018Well, if I can hit it really, really far, there\u2019s a definite advantage,\u2019 \u2019\u2019 Cantlay said. \u201cSo, we might see distance be even more of a factor in five or 10 years just because of the influence that [DeChambeau] may have on the younger generation.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

That would be fine with DeChambeau.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really am about human progress and how much good I can do for the world,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cIt would be amazing to win however many tournaments, [but] I think being a proponent of change in a good way would be something that hopefully I would be proud about more than winning all the tournaments.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

At the moment, he\u2019s doing both.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
