An attempt to honor Juneteenth has backfired spectacularly for one Georgia Ikea.<\/p>\n

An Atlanta branch of the Scandinavian furniture chain has sparked outrage with what employees are calling an intensely problematic menu curated to celebrate the holiday, which marks the emancipation of the very last enslaved Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTo honor the perseverance of Black Americans and acknowledge the progress yet to be made, we observe Juneteenth on Saturday, June 19, 2021,\u201d begins an email acquired by TMZ<\/a>, which was sent to employees at the branch last week. \u201cLook out for a special menu on Saturday which will include: fried chicken, watermelon, mac n cheese, potato salad, collard greens, candied yams.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The selection, including items that have historically been used to demean African-Americans through stereotyping, resulted in multiple employees calling out of work in protest, according to a local news<\/a> channel.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot say serving watermelon on Juneteenth is a soul food menu when you don\u2019t even know the history. They used to feed slaves watermelon,\u201d an anonymous employee told Atlanta\u2019s CBS 46<\/a>. \u201cIt caused a lot of people to be upset. People actually wanted to quit. People weren\u2019t coming back to work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

As many as 33 workers didn\u2019t show up in response, CBS reported, causing the store\u2019s manager to apologize via internal email.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said, \u2018I truly apologize. The menu came off [offensive],\u2019\u201d the employee recalled.<\/p>\n

But this wasn\u2019t sufficient for forgiveness, and the worker said the controversy could have been easily avoided if only people of color had been included in the team that chose the menu. \u201cNone of the co-workers who sat down to create the menu, no one was black,\u201d they added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The following day, the store manager told CBS a new, revised menu was released. The updated version included collard greens, cornbread, mashed potatoes and meatloaf.\u00a0And Sunday\u2019s menu? \u201cFried chicken, mac \u2019n\u2019 cheese, collard greens,\u201d the employee said.<\/p>\n

Ikea did not return The Post\u2019s request for comment.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
