The good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> is that lossless playback is available to all existing subscribers at no extra cost.<\/p>\n<p>You can stream most music in lossless format except for broadcast radio, live and on-demand content, and music videos. Here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_Lossless_Playback\"><\/span>What Is Lossless Playback?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Music is compressed to save on space, particularly when it comes to streaming. The bitrate of a particular file or stream determines the quality of the music, with more bits <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly meaning better quality. When you choose a higher bitrate, you will also consume more bandwidth (streaming) or space on your device (downloading).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-735883\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hero__bope61zgz22u_medium_2x.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Apple Music\" width=\"650\" height=\"224\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Until recently, Apple Music could only be streamed using \u201clossy\u201d AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) compression. While Apple <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-au\/HT212183\">claims<\/a> that \u201cthe difference between AAC and lossless audio is virtually indistinguishable,\u201d the company now offers lossless compression that uses ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) instead.<\/p>\n<p>ALAC is an open-source format that uses around 50% of the space of uncompressed audio. Support ranges from\u00a016-bit\/44.1 kHz CD quality to more modern 24-bit\/192kHz recordings. Enabling lossless audio playback for Apple Music is easy and comes at no extra financial cost, but there\u2019s more to lossless than simply flipping a switch.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Enable_Lossless_Playback\"><\/span>How to Enable Lossless Playback<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On an iPhone or iPad, you can enable lossless playback under the Settings app. First, launch Settings, and then tap on \u201cMusic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-735884\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_5031.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Apple Music Audio Quality\" width=\"650\" height=\"446\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Under \u201cAudio Quality,\u201d toggle \u201cLossless\u201d on or off, and choose between a 48kHz sample rate or a 192kHz sample rate (known as \u201cHi-Res Lossless\u201d). If you don\u2019t see the option, you might need to update your device.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-735885\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_5032.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Apple Music Lossless Audio Toggle\" width=\"650\" height=\"359\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>To do this on a Mac, open the Apple Music app, and then click on Music &gt; Preferences in the menu bar. On the \u201cPlayback\u201d tab, select \u201cAudio Quality,\u201d and then toggle Lossless on or off, choosing between 48kHz and 192kHz sample rates. If you don\u2019t see the option, update macOS.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use an Apple TV 4K to stream Apple Music in lossless quality. Launch Settings &gt; Music, and then select \u201cAudio Quality\u201d to toggle Lossless on or off. You\u2019ll be limited to a sample rate of 48kHz on the Apple TV 4K.\u00a0If you don\u2019t see the option for lossless audio, try updating your Apple TV.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AirPods_Arent_Enough_for_Lossless_Playback\"><\/span>AirPods Aren\u2019t Enough for Lossless Playback<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Wireless headphones and earphones use compression to stream music from your iPhone to your ears. This includes Apple\u2019s AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and the Beats range of earphones and headphones.\u00a0Since audio must be compressed for use with wireless Bluetooth audio, lossless audio offers no benefits.<\/p>\n<p>This is true whether you\u2019re listening via iPhone, Mac, or Apple TV.<\/p>\n<p>To enjoy lossless audio, you\u2019ll need to use a wired pair of headphones or speakers or the built-in speakers on your iPhone (Yes, really.).<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the iPhone cannot output the higher sample rate of 192kHz (Hi-Res Lossless) without an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The DAC in the iPhone is limited to 48kHz output.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_You_Tell_the_Difference\"><\/span>Can You Tell the Difference?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re a bit annoyed that your expensive <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/New-Apple-AirPods-Max-Space\/dp\/B08PZHYWJS?tag=hotoge-20\">AirPods Max<\/a> won\u2019t support lossless audio, consider for a minute that most people can\u2019t tell the difference.
