It\u2019s a Big App<\/a>le birthday greeting for a big star of the silver screen.<\/p>\n

Straphangers passing through Manhattan\u2019s 72nd Street 1, 2, 3 station today will see the stop has been renamed \u201c72 Streep\u201d \u2014 on both the uptown and downtown platforms \u2014 to celebrate the birthday of multi-Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep, who turns 72 today, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one of these ideas that you have and you\u2019re just like, \u2018That\u2019s so perfect\u2019 \u2014 and she\u2019s a national treasure, so everyone\u2019s going to love it,\u201d said 57-year-old artist and photographer Adrian Wilson. He planned and installed the display along with his artist friend Matt Duncan, all with the use of easily removable stickers on the last \u201ct\u201d of the station\u2019s signs. <\/p>\n

Although Streep is his first tribute to a living celebrity, Wilson, who originally hails from England, is no stranger to turning subway stations into quirky artistic expressions. <\/p>\n

He spent years anonymously transforming city platforms, and even above-ground street signs, into memorials for recently deceased icons. <\/p>\n

He used stickers to transform the Prince Street N\/R tilework to read \u201cPRINCE RIP\u201d following the death of musical legend Prince in 2016. He paid homage to Aretha Franklin in 2018 at the Franklin Street 1 stop in Tribeca. More recently, alongside Duncan, he altered the mosaic tile signs at the 50th Street C\/E station to read \u201cRUTH ST.\u201d for the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.<\/p>\n

In late 2020, Wilson outed himself as the creator of the works. He had become an American citizen and no longer feared criminal charges, though his subway and street sign art all count as vandalism. (Wilson previously told The Post he\u2019d been arrested twice for trespassing and graffiti, but the cases were dismissed.)<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nice to not do a dead person \u2014 and I know as a gentleman you\u2019re not meant to reveal a woman\u2019s age \u2014 but it\u2019s everywhere,\u201d said Wilson of this most recent Streep installation.<\/p>\n

72 Streep quickly made its way to Wilson\u2019s Instagram account, @plannedalism<\/a>, early this morning \u2014 with photos and video yielding comments from his 12,100 followers, including \u201cOne [of] the best for sure,\u201d \u201cNo way!\u201d and \u201cthis is fantastic!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know there\u2019s some things that you do that you know that everyone\u2019s going to love,\u201d said Wilson. \u201cIt\u2019s a fun thing and it\u2019s what we need.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he hopes that Streep, should she catch wind of this display, enjoys it as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a gift from New York to one of our favorite people,\u201d said Wilson.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
