Facebook\u2019s bid to run ads on its virtual reality headsets hit a major snag after the company\u2019s only named developer partner said it was backing out of the plan amid a backlash from game<\/a>rs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The news<\/a> comes less than a week after CEO Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s social network revealed<\/a> last Wednesday that it would start testing ads on Oculus, its virtual reality headset, through a partnership with \u201cBlaston\u201d developer Resolution Games and two other unnamed game developers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In response, gamers flooded the Oculus store page<\/a> for Blaston \u2014 a cartoony shooter game that is popular on Oculus and sells for $9.99 \u2014 with one-star reviews.<\/p>\n

\u201cAds in a game I paid for? hell no, blaston is getting uninstalled for ever and I\u2019m not gonna buy a single game [from] this company from now on,\u201d wrote one reviewer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I see ads show up on a game I paid money to purchase and play, I will be uninstalling the game and asking for a refund,\u201d wrote another.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Resolution Games clearly felt the heat, announcing on Twitter Monday that it planned to back out of Facebook\u2019s advertising pilot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter listening to player feedback, we realize that Blaston isn\u2019t the best fit for this type of advertising test,\u201d the company wrote on Twitter. \u201cTherefore, we no longer plan to implement the test.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Resolution added that it was considering moving the ad test to one of its free games, \u201cBait!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion in 2014. Shortly afterward, Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey said his technology<\/a> would not be used to sell ads.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not going to track you, flash ads at you, or do anything invasive,\u201d Luckey promised<\/a> in a Reddit post.<\/p>\n

Facebook did not immediately reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

Last week, Zuckerberg said augmented reality headsets can eventually replace all art and media in people\u2019s homes.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
