“#’Jeopardy!’ apologizes for ‘shameful,’ ‘inaccurate’ clue<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Ticked-off \u201cJeopardy!\u201d fans have spoken \u2014 and they want the iconic game<\/a> show to \u201cdo better\u201d after a clue was declared \u201cshameful,\u201d \u201cmisogynistic\u201d and just downright medically \u201cinaccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The long-running game show used its official Twitter<\/a> account to apologize Tuesday after complaints poured in from viewers<\/a> regarding a medical disorder that was referred to as \u201cGrinch syndrome,\u201d a term considered highly offensive by those in the autonomic nervous system disorder community. <\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday\u2019s program included a clue about postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS),\u201d the show\u2019s social media mea culpa<\/a> read. \u201cAfter hearing from the community, we found we used an outdated and inaccurate term for this disorder, and we apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guest host Savannah Guthrie read the controversial clue on Monday\u2019s episode: \u201cPostural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is also known as Grinch syndrome because this organ is too small.\u201d The correct answer was the heart \u2014\u00a0however, \u201cin most patients with POTS, the structure of the heart itself is normal,\u201d according Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The online backlash was swift and blunt.<\/p>\n

Dysautonomia International \u2014 a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness of\u00a0autonomic nervous system disorders \u2014 slammed the phrase \u201cGrinch syndrome\u201d as egregiously \u201coutdated\u201d and \u201cmisogynistic.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHey @Jeopardy<\/a> no one with any credibility calls POTS \u2018Grinch Syndrome,\u2019 \u201c reps for the organizations said<\/a> in their first response to the offensive \u201cJeopardy!\u201d clue. \u201cPromoting outdated misogynistic terms to describe a debilitating autonomic nervous system disorder that impacts millions of Americans is not cool. We request an apology on behalf of our community. Do better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not acceptable. We\u2019d love to see real questions about the autonomic nervous system.\u201d<\/p>\n

One outraged fan tweeted<\/a> in response: \u201cThe extent of my disappointment in one of my favorite shows is indescribable. This is not true on top of just being cruel. My offspring doesn\u2019t have a \u2018Grinch\u2019 heart. Do better @Jeopardy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outspoken former child star Mara Wilson, of \u201cMatilda\u201d and \u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d fame, also hopped into the online fracas.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s also just not true! It was based on one doctor\u2019s contentious theory proposed more than ten years ago,\u201d said<\/a> Wilson, 33. \u201cThere\u2019s no scientific consensus. Disappointed to see @Jeopardy spreading medical misinformation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThinking back to all the EKGs, ECGs, stress tests, and heart monitors I\u2019ve had over the years, all of which have shown my heart to be totally normal, while my autonomic nervous system remains a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n

How are you going to make sure this doesn’t happen again? How are you going to make this right?
Most Americans don’t know what POTS is. This will be the first time they’ve heard of it. They are going to think the clue is accurate because of the show’s credibility.<\/p>\n

Author Lillie Lainoff,<\/a> a disability rights activist and founder of Disabled Kidlt Writers<\/a> on Facebook, thanked \u201cJeopardy!\u201d for its public apology \u2014\u00a0but pointed out that there is still no explanation for how this misinformation made it on air.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a term almost everyone with POTS hasn\u2019t even heard of. If there were more disabled and chronically-ill people working for you, this wouldn\u2019t have happened,\u201d Lainoff said<\/a>. \u201cHow are you going to make sure this doesn\u2019t happen again? How are you going to make this right? Most Americans don\u2019t know what POTS is. This will be the first time they\u2019ve heard of it. They are going to think the clue is accurate because of the show\u2019s credibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reps for \u201cJeopardy!\u201d did not immediately respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
