\nIt\u2019s no secret Vin Diesel<\/strong> and Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d<\/strong> Johnson<\/strong> have a complicated past! For years now, rumors have circulated about their arguments on the set of Fast & Furious<\/em>. In 2016, Johnson was even said to have called his co-stars \u201ccandy asses\u201d and \u201cunprofessional\u201d on Instagram<\/strong>. While he didn\u2019t name names, it was pretty clear he was talking about the 53-year-old, and sources even confirmed that the actors were butting heads at the time!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So what happ<\/a>ened behind the scenes to cause the hatred?<\/span><\/p>\n

The wrestler and film producer have attempted to downplay the headlines for years, but now the franchise\u2019s longtime lead is opening up about the \u201ctough love\u201d he gave The Rock back in the day\u2026 and what their relationship is like today!<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to Men\u2019s Health<\/em> ahead of the premiere of the latest installment, F9<\/em>, the Cali native dished:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a tough character to embody, the Hobbs character. My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be. As a producer to say, \u2018Okay, we\u2019re going to take Dwayne Johnson, who\u2019s associated with wrestling, and we\u2019re going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they don\u2019t know\u2019 \u2014 Hobbs hits you like a ton of bricks. That\u2019s something that I\u2019m proud of, that aesthetic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On former feuds, he continued:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat took a lot of work. We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything I\u2019d have to do in order to get performances in anything I\u2019m producing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Luckily the arguments weren\u2019t in vain since it has now been 20 years since the franchise began and Diesel couldn\u2019t be prouder of the series<\/a>\u2019 legacy, reflecting:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not uncommon that I\u2019ll give a speech on set where I\u2019ll say, \u2018We\u2019re making this franchise for people that are no longer with us,\u2019 which is very real, and the implications of that are very heavy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Paul Walker<\/strong>, Vin\u2019s right-hand man in the flicks, tragically passed away in 2013 amid filming for Furious 7<\/em>. He died after injuries sustained in a single-vehicle car crash, with his portion of the film finished in part by stand-ins. Deciding to continue the franchise following the actor\u2019s death was a \u201cdifficult decision\u201d for the entire cast and crew, but it turns out The Rock was a huge reason the eighth edition was created.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was making that difficult decision, should there be a [<\/span>Fast & Furious<\/span><\/em>] 8 or not, I called [Johnson] and he said, \u2018Brother, I will be there shoulder to shoulder with you to make sure it\u2019s the best movie in history.\u2019 And he delivered.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Now that they get to continue adding to the franchise, with a tenth movie already in the works, The Ropes<\/em> screenwriter further mused on the reason he\u2019s so dedicated to the film series:

\u201cBut at the same time, we\u2019re making the franchise for the people that aren\u2019t born yet. When you have a unique perspective of creating a franchise that spans generations, you realize, okay, we all have to be as brilliant as possible. We have to reach as high as we can. Because it may be more important than just a movie. More important than two hours of escapism. There may be something more at play.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Wow, obviously the dad of three takes his job seriously! No wonder 49-year-old Johnson felt like the celeb was difficult to work with if they weren\u2019t on the same page. Times have changed, with Vin now considering<\/span> Dwayne\u2019s a part of the family:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn my house, he\u2019s \u2018Uncle Dwayne,\u2019 and I\u2019m proud of that. We still love each other, that\u2019s my boy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
