NBCUniversal\u00a0will air some of the most anticipated Tokyo\u00a0Olympics\u00a0events, including gymnastics and US Men\u2019s basketball, on its streaming platform Peacock, the company said Wednesday, in an effort to draw more viewers to the service.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Olympics, which this summer will have limited spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic, are an opportunity for the Comcast-owned media<\/a> company to attract advertiser dollars and promote Peacock at a time when viewers are watching less live TV.\u00a0NBCUniversal\u00a0paid $7.7 billion to extend its US broadcast rights for the\u00a0Olympics\u00a0through 2032.<\/p>\n

The Game<\/a>s continue to face backlash as a majority of the Japanese public oppose holding the\u00a0Olympics\u00a0while the country struggles with COVID-19 infections. Just 8.2 percent of Japanese citizens have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Wednesday, according to a Reuters tracker.<\/p>\n

But the worldwide sports event is critical for\u00a0NBCUniversal\u00a0to garner attention to Peacock, which was a late entrant into the streaming wars and competes with deep-pocketed players like Netflix and Walt Disney\u2019s Disney+.<\/p>\n

Live coverage of some of the most popular sports like track and field and events featuring superstars such as US gymnast Simone Biles will be available for free on Peacock, the company said, though US Men\u2019s basketball will require a premium subscript<\/a>ion.<\/p>\n

Comedian Kevin Hart and rapper Snoop Dogg will headline a new commentary series<\/a> on Peacock to recap highlights of the Games.<\/p>\n

Peacock, which launched across the United States last July, offers a free, ad-supported version and two paid options: a $4.99-per-month service with commercials and 20,000 hours of programming; and an ad-free version costing $9.99 per month.<\/p>\n
