Conservative: The DeSantis Moment<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe term \u2018Florida man\u2019 usually comes loaded with negative connotations, but not if you\u2019re talking about Ron DeSantis,\u201d muses Spectator USA\u2019s Amber Athey<\/a>. \u201cThe first-term Republican governor\u2019s app<\/a>roval ratings have reached 64 percent,\u201d thanks to his deft handling of COVID and unabashed resistance of media<\/a> bullying. \u201cEnterprising apparel companies are already selling \u2018DeSantis 2024\u2019 gear \u2014 and a Trafalgar poll of likely contenders (excluding Trump) shows DeSantis leading the pack with 35 percent support among Republican voters.\u201d Excluding Trump is important, though: For DeSantis only has a chance if the 45th president stays away in 2024.<\/p>\n

Libertarian: Smart Dems Will Save Filibuster<\/strong><\/p>\n

The filibuster has persisted thus far because \u201ceach subsequent Senate majority recognizes that it won\u2019t retain control forever and will someday want to make use of the filibuster to stop the other team\u2019s agenda,\u201d notes Reason\u2019s Eric Boehm<\/a>. But lately, some Dems have sought to abolish it, so they \u201ccan accomplish all of their policy goals at once.\u201d The party should be thankful \u201cthat not all of its senators are willing to be so myopic.\u201d If the Senate\u2019s super-majority rules survive the next year and a half, \u201cit will be because just enough Democrats are smart enough to realize there\u2019s no such thing as a permanent majority.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education beat: 3 Cheers for Anti-CRT Moms<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe impressive array of courageous and relentless mothers around the country lambasting school boards for their support of vile critical race theory\u201d has been an \u201cexhilarating display of unity and common decency,\u201d cheers Carina Benton at The Federalist<\/a>. Mothers understand that \u201cstudents are being propagandized, not educated,\u201d and their \u201cprotective instincts are kicking in.\u201d But \u201cthe charlatans pushing critical race theory are not going to yield their racist agenda without a fight.\u201d The stakes couldn\u2019t be higher: The \u201cfoolish\u201d ideology is \u201cimperiling children\u2019s education and well-being and the preservation of a free society,\u201d so let\u2019s hope moms flexing their muscles are enough \u201cto force ethically delinquent school boards back into the sphere of integrity, intellectualism, academic rigor and basic morality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hate-hoax watch: An \u2018Irresponsible\u2019 Mayor<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mayor Dean Trantalis watched in horror as a car recently rammed into participants in a Pride parade in his city, killing one \u2014 but that\u2019s no excuse, charges the Sun Sentinel\u2019s editorial board<\/a>, for his \u201cirresponsible\u201d comment calling the accident an antigay \u201cterrorist attack.\u201d Even worse was \u201chis follow-up statement, in which he recanted his jump to conclusions without offering an apology. . . . It\u2019s one thing to exercise poor judgment in the immediate aftermath of tragedy. It\u2019s another thing entirely to put out a statement hours later that you were mistaken without offering anything conciliatory\u201d to those terrified by the original statement. Also guilty: the many blue-check figures who repeated Trantalis\u2019 claim without waiting for the facts.<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Palestinians\u2019 Vaccine Follies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Caf\u00e9 life in Tel Aviv has returned to its charming pre-COVID normal, reports Jonathan Sacerdoti at Spectator USA<\/a> \u2014 so it\u2019s \u201csurprising that \u00adIsrael\u2019s offer to advance more than 1 million Pfizer vaccines to the Palestinians has been rejected by the Palestinian Authority only hours after it initially accepted the deal.\u201d The rejection notably comes after many global commentators bashed the Israelis for not vaccinating the Palestinians (an obligation that falls to the PA under the Oslo Accords). Yet once the first batch of 90,000 doses did make it to the Palestinian authorities, \u201cthe PA rejected them, arguing that the vaccines don\u2019t meet their standards. Some were due to expire in just 13 days but were, of course, still \u00adviable if administered in that time frame.\u201d Perhaps the real reason had to do with the \u00adimpression of \u201cnormalization\u201d with the Jewish state that \u00adaccepting the \u00adcooperation might have created. Then, too, \u201cthe PA may also struggle to allay fears of corruption in how it distributes its vaccines.\u201d In the event, vaccine redistribution from rich regions to poor ones is essential, but that \u201ccan only work if [the latter] accept the help when it is offered.\u201d<\/p>\n
