Don\u2019t tell JB Smoove that he has to cancel the art made by his comedy heroes who have fallen from grace. On this week\u2019s episode of \u201cRenaissance Man,\u201d the funnyman best known as Leon on \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm\u201d admitted he still watches old Bill Cosby movies<\/a> and said it\u2019s hard to erase what once gave him motivation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf someone has disapp<\/a>ointed you, the one thing you can\u2019t give back is the inspiration that they gave you, because it was before their downfall,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI used to love me some Bill Cosby,\u201d he said. \u201cThis man is just sitting there telling stories. Amazing. And I don\u2019t know if I can stop watching \u2018Uptown Saturday Night.\u2019 If I\u2019m turning channels and it\u2019s on, I can\u2019t be like, \u2018Oh man, Bill f\u2013ked up<\/a>, I can\u2019t watch it no more.\u2019 It\u2019s etched in our upbringing.\u201d <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve known JB for years and have probably seen him perform close to 30 times. He holds very strong opinions, but he is so funny and disarming that he isn\u2019t one to alienate an audience or step on any toes. JB is for everyone. So if he offends you, it\u2019s your fault.<\/p>\n

Sure, he\u2019s ridiculously funny, quick witted, talented, stylish and probably owns more hats than anyone in Hollywood. But he is a man who prepares like crazy, and he abides by very strong philosophies. One is \u201cNever be the first to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can be the first one to be successful at it, but you don\u2019t have to be the first person to try it,\u201d JB said. \u201cYou just gotta be the first person to master that s\u2013t \u2026 You\u2019re not slighting anyone who did it before you.\u201d<\/p>\n

After all, he noted, Michael Jackson wasn\u2019t really the first person to moonwalk. The move\u2019s origins have been attributed to a number of acts. And Michael Chambers, aka Turbo from \u201cBreakin\u2019,\u201d was doing a version of it already when he worked with Michael, who then adapted it with his particular flavor. <\/p>\n

JB, too, has a knack for bringing his own flavor to everything he does. But he\u2019s also a student of his craft.<\/p>\n

And at times, Larry David has been his teacher. JB is a \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d alum, and he said that when he arrived on the \u201cCurb\u201d set, he played Leon like he would in an \u201cSNL\u201d scene. After his first take, Larry told him to play it more \u201creal\u201d and less like a sketch.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce I did that, it was off to the races. Even after our first day together, [Larry] said it felt as though we had been working together for years.\u201d <\/p>\n

But he wants to set the record straight. JB is not Leon Black, and does not walk around in sandals, shorts and a do-rag telling people he\u2019s gonna kick their ass.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes when you improvise, people think that\u2019s you all the time. A lot of times the actors on \u2018Curb,\u2019 who are amazing actors, they will get stuff [from fans] like, \u2018That\u2019s you. You\u2019re playing yourself, you\u2019re not doing a character,\u2019 which is totally wrong. No one could possibly live like Leon. You can\u2019t live like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

JB\u2019s been doing improv since high school. But he said taking an improv class early on in his career added value to all aspects of his life, not just in showbiz. He recommends it for anyone and everyone, regardless of your industry. <\/p>\n

\u201cI tell people all the time, I don\u2019t care what you do, take an improv class,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can sell houses. If you have the ability to improvise your way into s\u2013t and out of s\u2013t, it\u2019s the greatest gift you could ever have. You know, it gives you that immedia<\/a>te gift of gab, it gives you something to go to. It gives you a recovery \u2026 I tell young people all the time, \u2018Before you jump into business, take an improv class. Take it. I promise. Put that in your tool box.\u2019 I\u2019m telling you, it will help you in your business, help you in your personal [life], help you to be able to change gears in the moment, man. It\u2019s an amazing tool to have.\u201d<\/p>\n

I am currently googling improv classes as I write this, and I hope JB will be my tutor. <\/p>\n

But I also wish I got a chance to be a guest on his old MSG show, \u201cFour Courses With JB Smoove,\u201d where he chopped it up over dinner with athletes and comedians. I asked which comedians, dead or alive, would be his dream dinner companions. His illustrious list: Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy and Dave Chappelle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took a back seat on that one because, you know, this is normally four people and I make the fifth, but I picked five just now,\u201d JB said. \u201cSo I\u2019ll be the one serving them and pouring Champagne, just listening to what they\u2019re talking about. Let me stay a little longer: \u2018Would there be anything else, sir?\u2019 That\u2019s an amazing mix of who inspired me.\u201d<\/p>\n

JB is returning the favor in the inspiration department, and slowly realizing his own legacy. Case in point: I asked him about the 2001 cult classic \u201cPootie Tang,\u201d which he starred in alongside Chris Rock. It was panned by Roger Ebert, but has taken on a life of its own.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe movie is definitely not perfect. The movie is definitely funny and fun, but it\u2019s got to be your thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

JB said that in May, he received an honorary doctorate from Norfolk State University, where he also delivered the commencement speech. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just sitting onstage and all these amazing students are coming by and getting their diplomas,\u201d he said. One young man came onstage, grabbed his diploma and dropped a line from \u201cPootie Tang\u201d on JB.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was laughing so hard, I was crying. That\u2019s why I say it\u2019s hard to erase things that motivate and influence you. People just love what they love. This kid is young and he\u2019s talking about a movie older than him.\u201d<\/p>\n

And JB also unapologetically loves what he loves. That includes the New York Knickerbockers. Don\u2019t ask him to jump on any Nets bandwagon.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody knows, man, win or lose, the Knicks run New York. Win or lose. It doesn\u2019t matter. This is a Knick town. We\u2019ll take the Knicks bad news<\/a> over the Nets good news,\u201d he said, adding that even though he can walk to Barclays Center from his home, he won\u2019t go there to watch the Nets play, unless they are taking on the Knicks. <\/p>\n

But the reality is both teams have been eliminated from the playoffs, so it\u2019s a moot point for now. Let\u2019s move on to more important things: getting JB and Samuel L. Jackson on a project together. Sam is the one person with whom he wants to work.<\/p>\n

They met for the first time on the \u201cSpider-Man: Far From Home\u201d red carpet and clicked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked and we hugged each other like, \u2018This is the greatest thing on earth\u2019 \u2026 I said, \u2018Man, we gotta do something together\u2019 \u2026 I think together we would hurt somebody \u2026 He said, \u2018We gotta do it, JB.’\u201d<\/p>\n

So Sam, give JB a call. We can\u2019t wait for this power duo to join forces. <\/p>\n
