Users who create such posts face up to five years in prison.\u00a0Tech platforms that do not remove them within 24 hours will be fined up to $415,000.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s government developed the 192-page bill in response to the 2019 mass shooting at a mosque in New Zealand, in which a white supremacist gunman killed 51 worshippers while live-streaming the murders on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian center-right government\u2019s communications minister Paul Fletcher <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paulfletcher.com.au\/media-releases\/keeping-australians-safe-online-0\">said<\/a> the new law enables the country to \u201ccrack down on cyber-bullying of children, toxic online abuse, harmful content and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.\u201d Enforcement of the new law will begin in six months, he said.<\/p>\n<p>A Twitter spokesperson told The Post that the company plans to comply with the law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter shares the Australian government\u2019s strong commitment to online safety, and we make ongoing investments in this area to keep our users safe,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cCurrently, our teams are reviewing the final version of the legislation and will be working closely with the government and eSafety Commissioner in the coming months as this law is implemented in Australia.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a February <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/australia.fb.com\/post\/new-law-to-keep-australians-safe-online\/\">statement<\/a>, Facebook\u2019s Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands public policy director Mia Garlick said the company broadly supported additional privacy regulation but said the bill\u2019s breadth could lead to regulatory overreach and stifle political speech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Opponents including Australia\u2019s Green Party have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/ai-bias-and-discrimination-aplenty-australian-greens-want-online-safety-bill-repealed\/\">slammed the bill<\/a>, arguing that it was pushed too quickly without debate. Online civil liberties group Electronic Frontiers Australia said that the bill gave far too much authority to the nation\u2019s eSafety Commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is disturbing that the government plans to hand a large amount of largely unchecked power to a single person,\u201d Electronic Frontiers Australia board member Justin Warren <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationaus.com\/why-the-rush-online-safety-bill-still-not-passed\/\">told Australian news site InnovationAus<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hasty drafting of the legislation has removed a variety of oversight mechanisms and safeguards that already exist, while extending Australia\u2019s outdated censorship regime to cover private, person-to-person messages,\u201d Warren added.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
