“#How Daniel Sharman trained for his mysterious villain role in \u2018Cursed\u2019<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n English actor Daniel Sharman took an unusual route in training for his role as a cold-blooded killer in \u201cCursed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did some ballet and some versions of Muay Thai \u2014 layering this stuff to build a [character] that was able to be incredibly lethal and effective and graceful at the same time,\u201d Sharman, 34, tells The Post.<\/p>\n

Premiering Friday on Netflix, and based on a graphic novel of the same name, \u201cCursed\u201d is a version of the King Arthur legend, set in a world of magic and adventures in creepy forests. It follows Nimue (Katherine Langford \u201c13 Reasons Why,\u201d) a powerful girl with mystical powers who crosses paths with a young Arthur (Devon Terrell, \u201cOphelia\u201d). The show\u2019s villains are a fanatical group known as the Red Paladins (led by Peter Mullan, \u201cOzark\u201d) who inflict terror on the world.<\/p>\n

Sharman\u2019s character is a mysterious hooded figure who works (and burns villages with) the Red Paladins. He\u2019s known only as \u201cThe Weeping Monk,\u201d though eventually more of his background is revealed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s the most Frank Miller-looking character,\u201d says Sharman, referring to the show\u2019s co-creator, known for the graphic novels behind films such as \u201cSin City\u201d and \u201c300.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[The Weeping Monk] has birthmarks under his eyes that later on reveal his past \u2014 and he\u2019s shrouded in a cloak under a hood \u2014 but he\u2019s a ruthless killer,\u201d he says. \u201cHe looks a bit like the Grim Reaper. You have to keep still, because his every movement shades your vision. That immedia<\/a>tely informs him as a still character, and the gestures have to be gliding and graceful to get underneath the robes. You feel hidden.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s very much part of the character\u2019s journey, someone going from being hidden to exposed,\u201d he says. \u201cThere was something nice about being able to walk around and feel mysterious.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharman says that, while filming \u201cCursed\u201d in England, he spent so much time working on The Weeping Monk\u2019s movements with his trainer Raheem Glistens that the two became close friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m actually now the godfather to one of his babies,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a cool thing to come out of the whole process.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Sharman\u2019s dramatic app<\/a>earance in \u201cCursed\u201d stands out, this is isn\u2019t his first rodeo in genre fare. He\u2019s also gotten up close and personal with werewolves, zombies, and vampires in shows such as \u201cTeen Wolf,\u201d \u201cFear the Walking Dead\u201d and \u201cThe Originals.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember coming out of drama school and one of my teachers said, \u2018You look like a weird elf, so no one\u2019s going to cast you in anything that looks real, because you look odd.\u2019 And that\u2019s kind of how I end up in [sci-fi and fantasy]. It\u2019s because people have been like, \u2018You just look strange; we\u2019re not going to cast you as the person who lives next door!\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Sharman says he relished his chance to work with Miller.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an artist myself, a painter and sketch artist, I find his aesthetic really fascinating,\u201d he says. \u201cI grew up with these movies<\/a> [\u2018Sin City\u2019 and \u2018300\u2019] being so visually different and so interesting to me. I thought, \u2018Oh that\u2019s really cool, I\u2019d love to work with that person who could make such stark choices.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoyed my time with him,\u201d he says. \u201cWe spent a lot of time eating terrible English breakfasts together.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
