Catalonian authorities stated they believe\u00a0McAfee took his own life.<\/p>\n<p>Things aren\u2019t that simple though. I mean, with John McAfee and the internet involved, how could they be?<\/p>\n<p>Already, there are conspiracy theories circulating \u2014 many of which were started by McAfee himself. He tweeted about suicide <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/officialmcafee\/status\/1397930793075462144\">just a couple of months ago<\/a>. And, while we\u2019re on the topic of the social network, McAfee previously used it to draw <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/officialmcafee\/status\/1316801215083225096\">further comparisons with Epstein and his own potential suicide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a story that will go away any time soon.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_brief_the_life_of_McAfee\"><\/span>In brief: the life of McAfee<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>What\u2019s there to say about John McAfee now that he\u2019s passed? Well, for better or worse, he was one of a kind.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, he gained fame for creating one of the world\u2019s first bits of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McAfee\">antivirus software, also named McAfee<\/a>. Since resigning from the company in 1994 though, McAfee has lived what can only be described as a wild life. He\u2019s run from the law in Central America. He\u2019s announced a bid\u00a0to run for President. And promised to \u201ceat [his] dick on national television\u201d if the price of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/officialmcafee\/status\/887024683379544065\">a single Bitcoin didn\u2019t reach $500,000 in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing, it\u2019s currently just below $33,000.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How To Uninstall McAfee Antivirus\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bKgf5PaBzyg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While this sounds fun on the surface, McAfee led a far darker life than it suggests. He was accused of far more serious crimes than the tax evasion that landed him in Spanish prison, including\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TjBgNwAVLWQ\">drug running and rape<\/a>. Do not confuse him with a cuddly character.<\/p>\n<p>This is just scratching the surface of\u00a0McAfee\u2018s tumultuous and deeply controversial life though. He was accused of not paying or filing any tax returns, despite his substantial earnings. Hours before his suicide, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2021\/06\/23\/software-magnate-john-mcafees-extradition-to-u-s-is-approved\/\">the Spanish government agreed<\/a> to extradite\u00a0McAfee to the United States for trial.<\/p>\n<p>This would have likely led to decades in prison, which would have encompassed the rest of McAfee\u2018s life.<\/p>\n<p>Here though, we get in muddier waters. While some people will want to compare his death to Epstein, the big difference is McAfee had been \u201crevealing\u201d secrets for years.<\/p>\n<p>Anything he was going to say in court, he likely had already said to the public. This was not the case with Epstein.<\/p>\n<p>The argument that McAfee was killed in order to protect powerful people is flawed from the start. Will this stop people pushing the idea of a conspiracy though? Of course not. McAfee is too strong of a presence in the internet\u2019s collective consciousness for that to h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next days, weeks, and months, we\u2019ll see McAfee\u2019s life laid bare and every inch of it explored \u2014 and a large portion of it was likely horrible.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, it\u2019s impossible to ignore the oversized influence that McAfee has not only had on the computing world, but internet culture at large. He truly was a once-in-a-generation figure \u2014 whatever that actually means.<\/p>\n<p>At least we can agree on one thing though, McAfee has left behind confusion, chaos, and recriminations: which is exactly how he would\u2019ve wanted to go.
