They used to feed slaves watermelon,\u201d an anonymous employee told Atlanta\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs46.com\/news\/ikea-menu-causes-outrage-among-employees-and-customers\/article_8e7e7994-d2de-11eb-8b20-6b796093ad51.html\">CBS 46<\/a>. \u201cIt caused a lot of people to be upset. People actually wanted to quit. People weren\u2019t coming back to work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Richard Rose, Atlanta\u2019s NAACP branch president, stopped short of labeling the popular furniture and houseware brand\u2019s intention as racist. But he did tell TMZ he found the Juneteenth menu \u201cobviously insensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose chalked the entire debacle up to a possible lack of diversity among decision-makers at Ikea.<\/p>\n<p>An IKEA spokesperson sent The Post a lengthy statement on Tuesday, noting that employees are coming back to work, the \u201clunch menu was created with the best of intentions\u201d and cultural dialogue will be ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to offering Juneteenth as one of our paid holidays nationally, our IKEA Atlanta store has recognized Juneteenth with our co-workers for the past four years. To honor the day, a lunch menu was created with the best of intentions, including recommendations from black co-workers,\u201d a spokesperson said. \u201cWe value our co-workers\u2019 voices and changed the menu after receiving feedback that the foods that were selected are not reflective of the deeply meaningful traditional foods historically served as part of Juneteenth celebrations. We got it wrong and we sincerely apologize. We are committed to educating ourselves and putting a process in place that will allow us to thoughtfully honor Juneteenth in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson additionally noted that \u201cthere were Black co-workers involved in the creation of the menu.
