“#NAACP slams Ikea’s Juneteenth menu apology as ’empty’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Ikea\u2019s apology for its controversial Juneteenth-theme<\/a>d lunch menu is leaving a bad taste in the mouth of Georgia\u2019s black community leaders. <\/p>\n

An Atlanta branch of the Swedish big box store is under fire this week for what employees denounced as a highly offensive \u201cspecial menu\u201d curated to\u00a0celebrate the holiday, which\u00a0marks the emancipation\u00a0of the last enslaved Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got it wrong and we sincerely apologize,\u201d Ikea reps told The Post of the problematic menu, which was hyped to staffers as \u201cfeaturing \u201cfried chicken, watermelon, mac n cheese, potato salad, collard greens, candied yams \u2026 to honor the perseverance of Black Americans.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

James Woodall, president of the NAACP\u2019s Georgia state chapter, is not ready to accept the Scandinavian furniture chain\u2019s mea culpa for the tone-deaf meal plan just yet.<\/p>\n

Woodhall told TMZ<\/a> that Ikea\u2019s official response to the public outrage was merely \u201can empty, performative gesture.\u201d Point blank: He thinks Ikea owes answers to its constituents \u2014\u00a0store employees and customers, alike.<\/p>\n

Critics called out Ikea for hyping \u201csoul food\u201d dishes that have historically been used to demean African Americans through stereotyping, with multiple employees calling out of work in protest, according to a local news<\/a> channel.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot say serving watermelon on Juneteenth is a soul food menu when you don\u2019t even know the history. They used to feed slaves watermelon,\u201d an anonymous employee told Atlanta\u2019s\u00a0CBS 46<\/a>. \u201cIt caused a lot of people to be upset. People actually wanted to quit. People weren\u2019t coming back to work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Richard Rose, Atlanta\u2019s NAACP branch president, stopped short of labeling the popular furniture and houseware brand\u2019s intention as racist. But he did tell TMZ he found the Juneteenth menu \u201cobviously insensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rose chalked the entire debacle up to a possible lack of diversity among decision-makers at Ikea.<\/p>\n

An IKEA spokesperson sent The Post a lengthy statement on Tuesday, noting that employees are coming back to work, the \u201clunch menu was created with the best of intentions\u201d and cultural dialogue will be ongoing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition to offering Juneteenth as one of our paid holidays nationally, our IKEA Atlanta store has recognized Juneteenth with our co-workers for the past four years. To honor the day, a lunch menu was created with the best of intentions, including recommendations from black co-workers,\u201d a spokesperson said. \u201cWe value our co-workers\u2019 voices and changed the menu after receiving feedback that the foods that were selected are not reflective of the deeply meaningful traditional foods historically served as part of Juneteenth celebrations. We got it wrong and we sincerely apologize. We are committed to educating ourselves and putting a process in place that will allow us to thoughtfully honor Juneteenth in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spokesperson additionally noted that \u201cthere were Black co-workers involved in the creation of the menu. Out of respect for their privacy, we cannot go into more detail, and we take this as an important learning and shared responsibility.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
