A friend of mine was complaining to me about one of his projects. At one point, I said to him, \u201cLook, if it bothers you so much, why not just cancel it? Just leave it to someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

He thought about it for a few seconds and then said, \u201cNo, because the reason I\u2019m complaining and being hesitant is that I\u2019m scared of something. And if I\u2019m scared of it, I need to face that. I try to do at least one scary thing a day. That\u2019s how I know I\u2019m making progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not as brave as my friend, but his response did remind me of my first public radio app<\/a>earance. I was still a kid, maybe 10 or so. I don\u2019t remember the show\u2019s subject or why they had me on, but I do remember being scared. So scared that I contemplated canceling the whole thing.<\/p>\n

When I expressed my doubts to my mother, she just shrugged and said, \u201cEverybody is scared and nervous, so you\u2019re on equal footing there, and your fear is irrelevant. So ignore that and just go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her answer didn\u2019t really hit home when I was that young, but I slowly started to understand my mother\u2019s philosophy. Much later in life, I saw a quote that encapsulated it well: \u201cEighty percent of success is showing up.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m still scared a lot. I\u2019m scared of hurting myself. Of being let down. I\u2019m scared of disappointing people and of not being taken seriously. I\u2019m scared of making a fool of myself and about losing the people I love.<\/p>\n

But I show up, despite my fears, because now I assume this is a universal feeling, shared by everyone. My brave friend takes it a step further. He actively searches for the things that cause him fear and anxiety, and then he drives right in.<\/p>\n

Whether you just show up or actively search out the things that frighten you, I believe we all want to improve ourselves. So while it might be more comfortable to stick with what you know, if you start being honest with yourself, you might realize what<\/em> scares you and eventually overcome it.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, just keep showing up.<\/p>\n
