“#’The Blacklist’ Creator Exits NBC Drama After Season 8 Finale<\/strong>”

There\u2019s another major change coming for The Blacklist<\/em><\/a> for Season 9.<\/p>\n

Following Megan Boone<\/a>\u2018s exit in the Season 8 finale, creator Jon Bokenkamp announced on Twitter<\/a> that he, too, is leaving the NBC drama, what he called a \u201cdifficult decision.\u201d (He was also a writer and executive producer since the premiere in 2013.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI love this show with all of my heart, and it\u2019s been an incredible journey, but after eight years I feel it\u2019s time for me to step out of my comfort zone, try something new, and explore a few of the other characters and stories that have been crawling around in my head,\u201d Bokenkamp shared. \u201cWhile I\u2019m excited about this next chapter, I\u2019d be lying if I didn\u2019t admit that I have mixed emotions about my departure. The Blacklist<\/em> is a family, and saying goodbye is difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to explain why he considers his time with the series<\/a> \u201ca blessing.\u201d \u201cHaving the ability to tell a new story every week \u2014 to an audience excited to watch \u2014 is a dream come true,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI am likely biased, but the Blacklist<\/em> fanbase is not only the most dedicated and ravenous in television, but whip smart and hard as hell to fool. You are the lifeblood of our show, and it\u2019s your enthusiasm that leaves me feeling \u2014 more than anything \u2014 grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bokenkamp\u2019s exit comes as The Blacklist<\/em> wrote out Boone\u2019s Liz Keen in the Season 8 finale. She sustained what looked like a fatal gunshot wound to the chest (though she wasn\u2019t pronounced dead onscreen, so anything is possible). That came as Raymond \u201cRed\u201d Reddington (James Spader<\/a>) had promised she\u2019d learn the truth about who he is (via a letter from her mother) after<\/em> she killed him to take over the blacklist. (Liz couldn\u2019t pull the trigger.) The finale seemed to be leaning towards confirming the theory that Red is actually Liz\u2019s mother, but nothing definitive has been stated on-screen.<\/p>\n

And so in a way, Bokenkamp telling TV Insider that the finale \u201cmay not be the ending of the series, but it\u2019s very much the ending of a story we\u2019ve been telling for eight years\u201d fits for more than Liz. It\u2019s true for his story with The Blacklist<\/em>, too.<\/p>\n
