\n Liberty University sued The New York Times for defamation Wednesday, accusing the paper of publishing a \u201cfictional tale\u201d about the school reopening after spring break and causing a coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n

The Lynchburg, Virginia, school accused the paper of publishing a \u201cclick bait\u201d story about a supposed coronavirus outbreak caused by the school reopening.<\/p>\n

The story spread rapidly across local and national news<\/a> outlets and on social media<\/a>, according to the Virginia Circuit Court lawsuit from Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Times\u2019 March 29 story, headlined: \u201cLiberty University Brings Back Its Students, and Coronavirus Fears, Too,\u201d was factually incorrect, the suit claims.<\/p>\n

The story reported that about 12 students \u201cwere sick with symptoms that suggested Covid-19,\u201d when the school reopened, the Times reported.<\/p>\n

A doctor cited in the piece was misrepresented in the story \u2014 and also wasn\u2019t the school doctor who would have been most knowledgeable on the subject, the court papers say.<\/p>\n

The doctor told the Times that the bulk of the students had \u201c\u2018upper respiratory infection\u2019 \u2014 that is, a cold \u2014 not the lower respiratory infection COVID-19,\u201d the suit states.<\/p>\n

In fact, the students weren\u2019t tested for the coronavirus because they didn\u2019t meet the criteria for it, the suit claims.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was never an on-campus student diagnosed with COVID-19,\u201d the suit claims.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only actual \u2018viral\u2019 element of this narrative that existed was the intense \u2018viral\u2019 internet attention it generated for the New York Times\u2019 website and for those paying to advertise on that website.\u201d<\/p>\n

When classes ended two months after spring break, there were still no on-campus students who had been diagnosed with the virus, the court papers say.<\/p>\n

Liberty claims in the suit that the Times writer was sent to Lynchburg \u201cto engineer a specific fictional tale that portrayed Liberty and its President as a caricature the New York Times\u2019 liberal audience would love: backward, irresponsible, anti-science<\/a>, responsible for getting people sick in a pandemic, and closely tied to and mirroring President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liberty President Jerry Falwell Jr. said in a statement: \u201cThey target us because the University is a conservative and Christian institution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Times did not immediately return a request for comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
