\u201cIn Treatment\u201d ends its fourth season Monday night \u2014 and Colin\u2019s final therapy session with Dr. Brooke Taylor is a disturbing, creepy, enlightening half-hour journey that rips the mask off a pathological liar whose bluff is finally called.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the most interesting things about him, and it\u2019s brave on the writers\u2019 part, is that they didn\u2019t put too many ribbons around him,\u201d said John Benjamin Hickey, who plays Colin opposite Uzo Aduba\u2019s Brooke on the HBO drama series<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019ve allowed breakthroughs for Colin, but it\u2019s always sort of one step forward and about five steps back. And I think that\u2019s largely because he\u2019s never encountered anybody in his life like Brooke.\u201d<\/p>\n

(Brooke\u2019s other weekly patients this season, Eliado and Laila, played by Anthony Ramos and Quintessa Swindell, have posed their own unique set of challenges for her as she deals with her personal demons.)<\/p>\n

If anything, Brooke and Colin\u2019s doctor-patient relationship has been a game<\/a> of mental cat-and-mouse since the season premiere \u2014 when Colin, a pushing-60 tech entrepreneur, landed on Brooke\u2019s couch in court-mandated therapy sessions after spending four years in prison for, in his glib estimation, \u201cmoving some decimal points around.\u201d It\u2019s up to Brooke to decide, in her professional opinion, if Colin goes back to prison or remains free to swan around in his self-consciously hip John Varvatos suits.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all-about Brooke for [Colin] because he thinks he understands women \u2014 he doesn\u2019t, and has objectified them for most of his life,\u201d said Hickey, 57. \u201cBecause he was raised in the counter-culture, he thinks he\u2019s \u2018woke\u2019 about black people. He\u2019s not, and he doesn\u2019t really listen to Brooke, and the fact that she\u2019s a woman and a person of color completely up-ends him in a way that makes his journey as zig-zaggy as it can possibly be.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe represents the patriarchy, for all intents and purposes, but they didn\u2019t write a stereotypical racist, homophobic, privileged white guy,\u201d Hickey said. \u201cThey wrote a privileged white guy, but because of where came from and all the damage in his past, which landed him in prison, they\u2019ve given him this kind of vulnerability when he\u2019s finally exposed [in the season finale].\u201d<\/p>\n

In the weeks leading up to Monday\u2019s season finale, Brooke and Colin have been at each other\u2019s throats yet have somehow managed to arrive at a mutual understanding \u2014 until Brooke unearths yet another of Colin\u2019s lies hidden behind his veneer of glib self-awareness. He\u2019s a sheep in wolf\u2019s clothing, at turns charming, manipulative, funny but, in the end, pathetic.<\/p>\n

Hickey, who\u2019s been in therapy, said he feels he has at least one thing in common with Colin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first started therapy and was weaving through the aspects of my life \u2014 being a young person who\u2019s gay, in a small town in Texas, I asked my therapist, \u2018Why am I so popular? I\u2019m on this club, that team,\u2019 and she said, \u2018I think your M.O. is that they can\u2019t hit a moving target.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think that\u2019s been Colin\u2019s M.O. his whole life,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it finally hit him when they busted him and put him in prison, but clearly that didn\u2019t do anything to him, didn\u2019t give him any hope for rehabilitation. It\u2019s not until he meets Brooke that he sees everything is a game to him. Clearly he can\u2019t play Brooke; he\u2019s more than met his match. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s finally found somebody who\u2019s better at the game than he is.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Brooke-Colin dynamic explodes into a furious confrontation in Monday night\u2019s season finale that reveals the complexities of their doctor-patient equation.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe finally admits [to Brooke] that what he\u2019s been doing is playing people, and he was trying to play her,\u201d Hickey said. \u201cThat\u2019s all he does with anybody \u2014 in prison, in his marriage, in his business relationships\u2026but the door weirdly continues to stay open as much as they continue to shut it on each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe can\u2019t quit her and she can\u2019t quit him,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think it can be reduced to, \u2018Well, at the end of the day Brooke kind of likes Colin.\u2019 He\u2019s sort of an unsolvable problem to her\u2026and I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a closure that is satisfying to either of them.\u201d<\/p>\n
