Roller-skating is having a resurgence with New Yorkers. Some have been wheeling around for decades, while others took up the hobby for social<\/a>ly distanced fun during lockdown and kept on grooving.<\/p>\n

Across New York City, roller rinks are hosting lively theme<\/a>d events for all ages, and skaters are taking to the streets \u2014 and TikTok \u2014 to show off their skills. <\/p>\n

Mia Madden, a musician who skates at Tompkins Square Park, credits the sport\u2019s popularity to TikTok and the fact that it looks great on camera. \u201cPeople were taking lots of videos, just because it\u2019s aesthetically pleasing to look at,\u201d said Madden, 24, who lives in Alphabet City. \u201cI think that just caught on \u2014 most things go viral if they\u2019re pretty to look at.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tim Young, a singer from Brooklyn, only started skating in April 2020, but he\u2019s now a regular MC at Dreamland Roller Rink in Prospect Park. That\u2019s where he and his \u201cskate gang\u201d of 20 friends can be found every Friday night. <\/p>\n

\u201cTo go from showing up there, not even being able to stand up, to then being the person in the center welcoming people and showing other people how to skate was just the perfect way to recover from the tragedy that was this past year,\u201d the 34-year-old told The Post. <\/p>\n

Everyone\u2019s bad at first, who cares?\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Actress and pro skater Lynna Davis frequents Central Park Skate Circle every weekend. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the best exercises,\u201d said Davis, who\u2019s been skating for 30 years. \u201cThe freedom, the self creation; certain things from the music will allow your body and mind to do certain things that you didn\u2019t even know you could do. I think that freedom heals your mind, your body and your soul.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris Barreto, a visual artist who splits her time between New York and Brazil, recently decided to start skating again after a decade. In a spur of the moment decision, she purchased a pair of new skates and headed to Central Park for the Dance Skaters Association\u2019s<\/a> \u201cPurple Rain\u201d party. \u201cI didn\u2019t know anybody. So I just embraced the dance and started really rolling. One of the organizers just held my hand and said \u2018OK! Come dance with me!\u2019\u201d recalled Barreto, who now skates every weekend she can. \u201cIt\u2019s so weird that I feel like I know these people already.\u201d<\/p>\n

A recent theme night at Dreamland was \u201cLady Gaga vs. Madonna\u201d, and Jasmine Padro, 43, won the costume contest, donning a pink leotard and a shaggy feathered hairstyle from Madonna\u2019s 2005 music video \u201cHung Up.\u201d \u201cPeople looking for fun things to do outdoors has definitely heightened the skating thing,\u201d Padro, who works as a hairstylist in Bay Ridge, said. She has been looking for lively skating rinks ever since the Roxy closed in 2007. She frequents Dreamland and RollerJam, but hopes more rinks open up in the future. \u201cIt just isn\u2019t enough. There used to be a lot more,\u201d she said. \u201cI love dressing up, so it gives me a reason to be creative and get a costume together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even before the pandemic hit, Aviya Fowler and Emanuel Rollins, a married couple from Paterson, NJ, were on a roll, often skating until 2 in the morning at rinks in New York and Jersey. \u201cIt\u2019s the only time I feel free,\u201d Fowler, 24, said. \u201cI just forget about the world and I let go and I\u2019m happy for four hours straight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachel Montana (front) first started skating in the early \u201980s at the Roxy and went on to meet her current husband at the famous club. \u201cThrough my marriages, heartaches, heartbreaks, I never stopped skating,\u201d she said. Montana now hits up Staten Island\u2019s RollerJam USA<\/a> with pals including Gail Battista, 52 (center, in aqua). On Saturday nights, the beloved-rink is \u201cadults only\u201d with the ambience of a night club and a fully-stocked bar.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Friday night is \u201cRoller Disco\u201d night at Prospect Park\u2019s Dreamland Roller Rink, and it\u2019s all about retro costumes and special themes. \u201cSoul Train\u201d and \u201c\u201990s Hip-Hop\u201d are on the calendar for this summer. \u201cIt\u2019s really a party,\u201d said Moors. \u201cPeople go all out.\u201d<\/p>\n
