Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared in court Wednesday and revealed to a judge just how much her conservatorship has cost her \u2014 both emotionally and financially.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cI\u2019ve been in shock. I am traumatized,\u201d she said, in the middle of her <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/music\/news\/britney-spears-full-statement-conservatorship-1235003940\/\" class=\"icon none\">24-minute statement<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s been 13 years. And it\u2019s enough. It\u2019s been a long time since I\u2019ve owned my money.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Born in 1981 in Mississippi and raised in Louisiana, Spears resides in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.ca.gov\/selfhelp-conservatorship.htm?rdeLocaleAttr=en\" class=\"icon none\">California,<\/a> where conservatorship is legally defined as a judge-appointed \u201cresponsible person or organization (called the \u2018conservator\u2019) to care for another adult (called the \u2018conservatee\u2019) who cannot care for herself or manage her own finances.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, after Spears\u2019s public struggles with mental health, the pop star\u2019s father, Jamie Spears, gained legal status as her conservator. As a result, Spears has been unable to control her own assets for the past 13 years \u2014 and she has a net worth of $60 million, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/maddieberg\/2021\/02\/17\/britney-spears-net-worth-revealed--and-its-shockingly-low-compared-to-her-pop-peers\/?sh=50b72b8a18ac\" class=\"icon none\">Forbes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI shouldn\u2019t be in a conservatorship if I can work and provide money and work for myself and pay other people \u2014 it makes no sense,\u201d she told the judge on Wednesday. \u201cThe laws need to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also read: <\/strong><strong>The hearing for Britney Spears and her \u2018toxic\u2019 conservatorship case approaches \u2014 why all Americans, especially older ones, should stay tuned<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Documents reviewed by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/maddieberg\/2021\/06\/24\/how-much-did-britney-spearss-dad-earn-controlling-her-life\/?sh=20b9b1457a6b\" class=\"icon none\">Forbes<\/a> revealed that Jamie Spears has been paid at least $5 million since the start of the conservatorship in 2008. A year later, according to Forbes, Spears started to make monthly $16,000 payments to her father. Those, over 12 years, have added up to $2.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>Spears alleged that her father often forced her to do things she didn\u2019t want to do, threatening to block her access to her money if she didn\u2019t follow his rules. And she said\u00a0restrictions were placed on her, including that she wasn\u2019t allowed to carry her own credit card, was forced to use an IUD despite wanting to have another baby, and she had to participate in various rehabilitation programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow come I was always threatened by my dad and anybody that participated in this conservatorship? If I don\u2019t do this, what they tell me to enslave me to do, they\u2019re going to punish me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Spears added that she felt she had no choice but to do the \u201cPiece of Me\u201d concert residency in Las Vegas from 2013 to 2017. According to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/22\/arts\/music\/britney-spears-conservatorship.html\" class=\"icon none\">New York Times<\/a>, Spears\u2019s father took 1.5% of the residency\u2019s gross ticket and merchandise sales, from which he made at least $2.1 million. Two years before that, he took a 2.95% commission from his daughter\u2019s \u201cFemme Fatale\u201d tour, making an estimated $500,000.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Aside from payouts to her father, Spears has had to pay millions of dollars to lawyers since the start of her years-long legal battle. One court document said she paid nearly $332,000 to her lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III, for his services between 2016 and 2018. It is estimated that Spears has paid Ingham at least $3 million in legal fees since 2008, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/24\/arts\/music\/britney-spears-lawyer-samuel-ingham.html\" class=\"icon none\">New York Times.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ingham is facing scrutiny for failing to take action for Spears, after she told the judge on Wednesday, \u201cI didn\u2019t know I could petition the conservatorship to be ended. \u2026 My attorney says I can\u2019t \u2014 it\u2019s not good.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now experts are saying Spears may have been robbed of her right to petition the conservatorship, as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s certainly troubling that this has gone on for so long if she has wanted to end it,\u201d Rebekah Diller, an expert on guardianships, reportedly told the New York Times. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to know exactly what\u2019s gone on behind closed doors, but in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> one would hope she has been told that throughout the years, because it\u2019s a critical right she was entitled to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, as the conservatee is usually responsible for paying the fees of a conservator\u2019s attorneys, Spears has had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for her father\u2019s legal representation. Forbes reports that she paid at least $170,000 in late 2018 to Freeman, Freeman and Smiley, the law firm representing Jamie Spears.<\/p>\n<p>A lawyer for Jamie Spears has claimed the father grew his famous daughter\u2019s assets. At the start of the conservatorship, the pop star\u2019s \u201cestate was nearly out of funds and cash equivalents,\u201d Jamie Spears\u2019s attorney wrote in a court filing in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtraordinary skills have been employed by all in order to achieve the results enjoyed at the present time. \u2026 [Jamie Spears] has had many months at a time where all of his professional time was spent in services rendered exclusively to the conservatee,\u201d the document reads.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Spears \u201cis sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain,\u201d Forbes quoted the father\u2019s lawyer as saying. \u201cMr. Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s not a comprehensive tally, Spears has been estimated to have lost millions over the course of her 13-year conservatorship.
