Jeff is not used to being second or third. Elon is a gambler. He\u2019s risked it all a number of times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The competition revved up June 10, after Bezos, 57, announced that he \u2014 along with an anonymous billionaire who paid $28 million for a seat on the Amazon founder\u2019s New Shepard rocket \u2014 will fly to the brink of space and back on July 20, the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.<\/p>\n<p>On June 11, reports surfaced that Branson, 70, would steal Bezos\u2019 thunder by going up in his Virgin Galactic VSS Unity over the Fourth of July weekend. (\u201cWe have not determined the date of our next flight,\u201d a Virgin Galactic spokesperson told The Post.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointing for Bezos to work on something for 20 years and then finish second to Branson,\u201d Eric Berger, author of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Liftoff-Desperate-Early-Launched-SpaceX-ebook\/dp\/B088FQK2K2\/?tag=nypost-20\">Liftoff: Elon Musk and the Desperate Early Days That Launched SpaceX<\/a>,\u201d told The Post. \u201cI think he looks at Branson as somebody who probably wants to make money off of space to extend his Virgin empire\u201d \u2014 rather than furthering humanity, like himself and Musk.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"HOW_THEY_PLAN_TO_GET_TO_SPACE\"><\/span>HOW THEY PLAN TO GET TO SPACE<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!--If the slideshow is embedded in another post type add the inline wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>As for Musk, Berger said, \u201cHe probably sees the Branson-Bezos race as a sideshow.\u201d<br \/>Musk\u2019s SpaceX has already had more than 100 successful blastoffs and sent astronauts into outer space.<\/p>\n<p>And while Musk, who turns 50 on June 28, has publicly expressed his skepticism of \u00adBezos \u2014 he once wrote, \u201cWe are likelier to discover unicorns dancing in the flame duct\u201d than for a \u00adBezos Blue Origin ship to \u201cdock with the Space Station\u201d \u2014 privately, insiders say, his feelings are more competitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest tension is between Elon and Jeff,\u201d Ashlee Vance, author of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Elon-Musk-SpaceX-Fantastic-Future\/dp\/006230125X\/?tag=nypost-20\">Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future<\/a>,\u201d told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Jabs from Bezos have been subtle \u2014 like when he tweeted \u201cWelcome to the club\u201d at Musk after the latter finally landed a rocket vertically in 2015. The comment was needling, making the point that Bezos was first.<\/p>\n<p>Always one to get the last word, Musk responded with a tweet of his own: \u201cIt is, however, important to clear up the difference between \u2018space\u2019 and \u2018orbit\u2019\u2009\u201d \u2014 making it clear that his rockets went into orbit while Blue \u00adOrigin\u2019s merely went into space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey do not care for each other,\u201d Vance added. \u201cElon dislikes Bezos. The company\u2019s first manned flight launched last year and was the first non-government vessel to dock a crew at the International Space Station. A second went up in April. Meanwhile, prototypes to get to Mars are being tested.<\/p>\n<p>Musk is known for his eccentric sense of humor \u2014 hosting \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d and sending a spacesuit-clad mannequin \u201cdriving\u201d a Tesla into space for a test mission of his Falcon Heavy rocket.<\/p>\n<p>But his offhanded tweets have also sent stock and cryptocurrency prices into a tailspin and gotten him in trouble with the Securities and Exchange Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElon has been great at whipping people into a frenzy of fandom,\u201d said Stone. \u201cBezos has to be jealous of that .\u2009.\u2009. He does not have the kind of personality for going on \u2018SNL.\u2019 Elon can be so jubilantly reckless and it works out for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Right now, Musk is the second richest man in America \u2014 worth, as of April 30, $172 billion to \u00adBezos\u2019 $202 billion. The two share a desire to establish space colonies; for Bezos, it\u2019s about floating habitats, where humans will live and work, that orbit Earth.<\/p>\n<p>His short-term goal, however, is taking people to the edge of outer space \u2014 for a few minutes of weightlessness and a view of Earth \u2014 via his Blue Origin vessels.<\/p>\n<p>After it was announced that Bezos would go himself, someone started a Change.org petition demanding he not return to Earth. More than 100,000 people have signed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBezos has a branding problem,\u201d Mark R. Whittington, author of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Why-America-Going-Back-Moon\/dp\/B095GCZKHQ\/ref=sr_1_1?tag=nypost-20\">Why is America \u00adGoing Back to the Moon<\/a>,\u201d told The Post. \u201cA lot of people don\u2019t like him .\u2009.\u2009. He\u2019s been compared to a Bond villain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Branson, meanwhile. has been in the space <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> since 2004. His company, Virgin Galactic, has a waiting list of 650 \u2014 including, reportedly, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Kate Winslet. Each will pay $250,000 for a two-hour flight with about five minutes in sub-orbital space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBranson does not view space as the answer to humanity\u2019s future,\u201d said Berger of the Virgin Airlines magnate, worth $5 billion. \u201cHe is basically interested in space tourism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Branson, going to space next month isn\u2019t just about showing up Bezos. If Bezos is seen as a Bond villain, Branson aspires to live like Bond.<\/p>\n<p>He once drove an amphibious car across the English Channel while wearing a tuxedo. When Virgin Galactic\u2019s hangar opened in New Mexico, Branson rappelled the building \u2014 while drinking Champagne. He launched his ill-fated Virgin Cola by driving a tank through Times Square.<\/p>\n<p>Not all of his stunts have worked out. Branson\u2019s big dream in the \u201990s was to set a world record by circling the globe in a hot-air balloon, but he never pulled it off. There was also the time, in 2007, that he celebrated the debut of his now-shuttered Virgin America airline by bungee-jumping off the roof of the Palms Casino in Vegas \u2014 only to bang into the building and rip his pants.<\/p>\n<p>Because Virgin Galactic\u2019s VSS Unity can rise only 55 miles \u2014 7 short of outer-space\u2019s borderline, by international standards \u2014 Messier predicts that Bezos will offer faint praise if Branson manages the July flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBezos\u2019 attitude will be, \u2018Congratulations on the flight, but you have not actually been to space,\u2019\u2009\u201d Messier said.<\/p>\n<p>It reportedly drives the three men crazy when one of their rivals publicly succeeds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBezos is quite jealous of all the federal contracts that Elon Musk and SpaceX have gotten,\u201d Berger said of lucrative deals in which SpaceX builds satellites and rocket-ship parts. \u201cInternally, he gets upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Jeff Bezos is the founder and CEO of Amazon and aerospace manufacturer of Blue Origin.\" class=\"wp-image-18647588 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jeff-bezos.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jeff-bezos.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jeff-bezos.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jeff-bezos.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jeff-bezos.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Jeff Bezos is the founder and CEO of Amazon and aerospace manufacturer Blue Origin.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bezos sent an e-mail to key employees in 2017 after Musk received a $1.3 billion tax break from the state of Nevada for locating his battery factory there: \u201cWhy does Elon Musk have this superpower of getting big government incentives and we don\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, \u201cMusk gets mad when he loses,\u201d said a Musk source. \u201cSpaceX lost out on \u00addevelopment money from the US Air Force. I heard he took it out on his government- affairs people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk is said to look down on the other men because he doesn\u2019t see their endeavors as being as serious as his.<\/p>\n<p>When Berger interviewed Musk on the CEO\u2019s private jet, the author mentioned that it had taken Bezos\u2019 team seven years \u00a0to build a rocket engine. \u201cI asked Elon why it took [Bezos] so long,\u201d Berger said. Musk responded: \u201cBezos is not great at engineering, to be frank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Branson, meanwhile, \u201cis literally not a rocket scientist,\u201d said Rand Simberg, an industry analyst who has had dealings with all three companies. \u201cHe is a brander.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Branson tried to purchase rocket engines and batteries from SpaceX. Branson treated Musk to dinner and thought he had a deal. But Musk, according to the book \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Test-Gods-Virgin-Galactic-Astronaut-ebook\/dp\/B08GJNZVT1\/?tag=nypost-20\">Test Gods: Virgin Galactic and the Making of a Modern Astronaut<\/a>,\u201d pretty much ignored further entreaties. In 2015, Musk squeezed Branson out of a satellite-internet-service deal with Google executives.<\/p>\n<p>And while a Bezos insider told The Post that \u201cJeff will be thrilled to beat Elon as first billionaire in space,\u201d it turns out that\u2019s not such a big feat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElon has better things to do,\u201d an ex-Musk employee told The Post. \u201cGoing into space for him is risky and a waste of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Richard Branson, most notably, started Virgin Atlantic airline and expanded the Virgin Records music label. He recently founded the spaceflight corporation, Virgin Galactic.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a>Punch\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Berger agreed. \u201cElon values engineers more than he values astronauts,\u201d the author said. \u201cFor him it\u2019s much more about the engineering challenge than it is about taking a quick ride into space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rob Meyerson, former president of Blue Origin and currently an operating partner at the C5 Capital investment firm, believes the competition makes them all better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHighly successful people are competitive \u2014 and they drive each other,\u201d he told The Post. \u201cSpaceX has a culture of us-against-the-world; that puts a chip on [Musk\u2019s] shoulders while driving them forward. And they set the pace\u201d for Bezos and Branson.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s contagious, especially when the public has three personalities to root for (or against): Musk the provocateur, Bezos the Bond villain and Branson the showman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving three individuals has made things entertaining and interesting,\u201d Meyerson said. \u201cIt has been a long time since we have had this much interest and accelerated progress in the space industry.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
