“#’We will not tolerate hate’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea reassured worshippers at an Upper East Side synagogue that the NYPD has \u201cnever tolerated hate\u201d of any kind \u2014 and never will, a Sabbath message delivered amid an uptick in anti-Semitic incidents citywide. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe message is that we will not and we\u2019ve never tolerated hate and we don\u2019t plan to now, so it\u2019s to reassure that anyone in New York City whether it\u2019s religious, whether it is the color of your skin, the NYPD will be out there to make sure that you can walk around freely and make sure everyone knows how tolerant we are,\u201d he told the congregation Saturday at the Park East Synagogue on East 67th Street. <\/p>\n

The NYPD commissioner said his goal was to \u201creassure the Jewish community\u201d in the face of \u201ca little over 300 hate crimes that we are investigating or have investigated\u201d so far this year. <\/p>\n

Through June 20, hate crimes were up 118 percent in 2021 as compared to the same time last year. Anti-Semitic incidents have spiked 64 percent during the same time period \u2014 100 incidents reported compared to 66 for the same period last year, the NYPD said.<\/p>\n

Shea told the gathering that some 486 \u201cnew guardians\u201d \u2014 the newest batch of NYPD cops who graduated Friday\u2013 will help turn the tide. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have those young officers eager, ready to hit the streets. I think we all know some of the challenges that we have talked about over and over but there is a lot of positives too. So that\u2019s what I\u2019m focused on right now, let\u2019s continue to work, continue to bring the city back and I think it\u2019s going to be, you know, good times ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

And a \u201cgreat relationship\u201d with the feds \u2014 William Sweeney, assistant director in charge of the FBI\u2019s New York Field Office was also on hand \u2014 should also be reassuring, he continued. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think the simple message for this congregation and for all New Yorkers, \u00a0the NYPD is here for you,\u201d Shea said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
