According to DJ Vourderis, whose family owns and operates the park, it\u2019s a high-speed love letter to New York City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to do something that would sit under the Wonder Wheel [the iconic Ferris wheel] and be worthy of it \u2014 and be worthy of Coney Island. We didn\u2019t want a cookie-cutter coaster,\u201d said DJ.<\/p>\n<p>The Phoenix is a suspended ride accelerating to speeds of 34 mph and a height of 68 feet. And while the Cyclone at neighboring Luna Park goes faster and higher, the Phoenix \u2014 a suspended coaster that leaves riders\u2019 legs dangling \u2014 packs a serious G-force that twists passengers up to 115 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t seen tight turns like this in a family coaster, ever,\u201d said DJ, noting that \u201cit feels a lot faster than 34 miles per hour, with all the near-misses\u201d \u2014 including hurtling riders right under the Wonder Wheel.<\/p>\n<p>It also won\u2019t make you lose your lunch.<\/p>\n<p><!--If the slideshow is embedded in another post type add the inline wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s proven \u2014 you can have a Nathan\u2019s hot dog before or after the ride without, um, giving it back,\u201d DJ said of the 67-second thrill.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/articles\/coney-island-rollercoaster\">Reportedly<\/a> costing $6 million, Phoenix is \u201cthe most expensive investment we ever made,\u201d \u00a0added DJ. It was inspired by the Dragonflier roller coaster at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and the family hired the same concept engineer, Tonny Schonewille of Dutch amusement-ride manufacturer Vekoma.<\/p>\n<p>The Vourderis family decided to call it \u201cThe Phoenix\u201d in the wake of the worst pandemic in a century.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is [a] place for us to heal,\u201d he said of the park, noting that the 101-year-old Wonder Wheel was built on the heels of the Spanish Flu. \u201cThere was a lot of risk back then, too, to build during a pandemic, but [people] believed in Coney Island .\u2009.\u2009.
