{"id":284959,"date":"2021-06-27T00:49:59","date_gmt":"2021-06-26T21:49:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/letters-to-the-editor-june-27-2021\/"},"modified":"2021-06-27T00:49:59","modified_gmt":"2021-06-26T21:49:59","slug":"letters-to-the-editor-june-27-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/letters-to-the-editor-june-27-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"#Letters to the Editor \u2014 June 27, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Letters to the Editor \u2014 June 27, 2021<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/061121Schools-Queens-Parents-Revolt.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Education win<br \/><\/strong>The Post is one of the few papers in our state to ever report the widely unknown fact that it\u2019s the Democrats, the supposed \u201cparty of the poor,\u201d who have for decades opposed parental choice in education, a key factor hurting low-income families (\u201cListen to the Parents,\u201d Editorial, June 20).<\/p>\n<p>Giving parents the right to pick a private school for their kids would also help all public-school students by providing competition, which improves education for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Most folks also don\u2019t know why Democrats oppose parental choice in education \u2014 it\u2019s their fear of our powerful public-school teacher unions.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone wins with school choice \u2014 students, parents and taxpayers, but sadly most voters have no idea it\u2019s the Democrats who are stopping school choice.<\/p>\n<p><em>Frank Russo<\/em><br \/><em>Port Washington<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Victims in shelters<br \/><\/strong>It is very sad and frightening to see homeless people attacking others on the city streets (\u201cCops bust homeless man for attempted Midtown rape,\u201d June 23).<\/p>\n<p>People who are victims of domestic violence also experience homelessness. To preserve their lives, they had to flee to shelters.<\/p>\n<p>Domestic violence is said to be the biggest single factor for homelessness in New York City. One in every four women have been victims of domestic violence, putting them at greater risk for homelessness. 2018 statistics from the comptroller\u2019s office showed 41 percent of people living in city shelters were domestic violence survivors with children.<\/p>\n<p>It is important for the next mayor to put high priority on survivors of domestic violence who are homeless in ensuring that they have access to affordable housing in New York City, especially through increasing funding to housing vouchers.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sandy Gabbidon<\/em><br \/><em>Brooklyn<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meat hypocrisy<br \/><\/strong>The Yulin meat festival rightfully outrages people around the world (\u201c68 dogs rescued from China\u2019s dog meat festival,\u201d June 21). However, while 20 million dogs are slaughtered in China every year, 25 million land animals are slaughtered in the United States every day.<\/p>\n<p>Why is a dog different than a pig? Both of these animals are friendly, intelligent and feel pain. Shouldn\u2019t we stop justifying the slaughter of animals altogether?<\/p>\n<p><em>Racheli Holstein<\/em><br \/><em>Pittsburgh<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Helping landlords<br \/><\/strong>At its annual meeting last Wednesday night to establish rent guidelines on 1- and 2-year leases for New York City\u2019s 1 million rent-stabilized apartments (effective Oct. 1, 2021-Sept. 30, 2022), the Rent Guidelines Board once again failed to understand that rent-stabilized property owners \u2014 the largest providers of affordable housing \u2014 depend on adequate rent increases in order to maintain aging buildings, pay continually rising property taxes and water rates and meet other increasing operational expenses (\u201c6-mo. city rent freeze,\u201d June 24).<\/p>\n<p>The RGB gets an A for creativity in providing a 1.5 percent rent hike for six months of a 1-year lease \u2014 as inadequate as it is \u2014 and for not enacting a complete rent freeze.<br \/>But the RGB gets an F for surrendering to political influence and ignoring the desperate plea of members of the Rent Stabilization Association (during public sessions) of the need for rent increases commensurate to their expenses \u2014 validated by the RGB\u2019s own data and reports.<\/p>\n<p>Our hope is that the next City Hall occupant realizes landlords are partners, not the enemy, and allows the RGB to act independent of political interference so affordable housing is not the next industry in New York to collapse.<\/p>\n<p><em>Aaron Sirulnick<\/em><br \/><em>Chairman of the Board, Rent Stabilization Association of New York City<\/em><br \/><em>Manhattan<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Want to weigh in on today\u2019s stories?
