President Biden tried to shore up his crumbling bipartisan infrastructure deal in the face of Republican fury Saturday \u2014 by claiming that he didn\u2019t mean to say he\u2019d hold the legislation hostage to a monster $4 trillion social<\/a>-spending bill that Democrats could pass on a party-line vote. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat statement understandably upset some Republicans,\u201d Biden admitted in a lengthy statement<\/a>, two days after he told reporters \u201cI\u2019m not signing\u201d the bipartisan deal \u201cif this is the only thing that comes to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy comments,\u201d Biden said Saturday, \u201ccreated the impression that I was issuing a veto threat on the very plan I had just agreed to, which was certainly not my intent.\u201d <\/p>\n

On Thursday, Biden and a group of 10 moderate Republican and Democrat senators celebrated outside the White House as they announced a $1.2 trillion, eight-year package of traditional infrastructure projects like roads, bridges and utility systems.<\/p>\n

But hours later, amid left-wing Democrats\u2019 protests, Biden app<\/a>eared to renege on the deal.<\/p>\n

In a second appearance Thursday, Biden said he would let the infrastructure bill stall unless Congress passed a second, much larger bill stuffed with tax hikes and social spending measures that Republicans bitterly oppose \u2014 and that Senate Dems could pass on their own under budget reconciliation rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they don\u2019t come, I\u2019m not signing it. Real simple,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n

The apparent bait-and-switch led some Republicans, including South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, to bail on the deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t mind bipartisanship, but I\u2019m not going to do a suicide mission,\u201d Graham told Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think my members think they needed the chiropractor because they got whiplash after watching the president yesterday,\u201d House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Friday \u2014 calling the presidential switcheroo \u201cdisingenuous in every shape or form.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
