\n China complained to the US ambassador that the Trump administration\u2019s recent actions on Hong Kong and trade is a \u201cbullying\u201d tactic that will be met with a \u201ccounterattack,\u201d as Secretary of State Pompeo is predicting Beijing will \u201cabsolutely\u201d pay a price for the spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang summoned\u00a0US Ambassador Terry Branstad to Beijing on Wednesday to criticize President Trump\u2019s signing of the Hong Kong Autonomous Act that revokes its special trade status.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to warn the US sternly that any bullying and unfairness imposed on China by the US will meet resolute counterattack from China, and the US attempt to obstruct China\u2019s development is doomed to failure,\u201d he said, according to state media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump signed the act\u00a0Tuesday at the White House in retaliation for China\u2019s imposing a draconian national security law on Hong Kong intended to quell pro-democracy protests and end dissent.<\/p>\n

It authorizes sanctions against Chinese Communist Party officials responsible for the crackdown and ends Hong Kong\u2019s special trade status, meaning it will be treated the same as mainland China and will face the same tariffs the administration slapp<\/a>ed on billions of dollars worth of Chinese products.<\/p>\n

Trump also said he has zero interest in meeting again with Chinese President Xi Jinping over trade issues because of the way Beijing handled the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe made a great trade deal, but as soon as the deal was done, the ink wasn\u2019t even dry and they hit us with the plague. So right now I\u2019m not interested in talking to China about another deal,\u201d Trump told CBS News<\/a> in an interview on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m interested in doing other things with China,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Branstad, in a statement issued Thursday by the US embassy, said he expressed the US\u2019 \u201cdeep concerns about China\u2019s decisions to erode Hong Kong\u2019s fundamental freedoms and to explain the details\u201d of the president\u2019s executive order on Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

\u201cHong Kong no longer warrants treatment under United States law in the same manner as United States laws were applied to Hong Kong before July 1, 1997,\u201d Branstad said in the statement, referring to when Britain returned Hong Kong to China.<\/p>\n

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo echoed Trump\u2019s sentiments about China\u2019s handling of the pandemic, saying Beijing will \u201cabsolutely\u201d pay a price for the spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the world will absolutely make them pay a price,\u201d Pompeo said in an interview with The Hill on Wednesday. \u201cYou can see it, every place I go, every foreign minister that I talk to, they recognize what China has done to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has blasted China for downplaying the seriousness of the virus after it was first reported in Wuhan, China, in late December.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very confident that the world will look at China differently and engage with them on fundamentally different terms than they did before this catastrophic disaster,\u201d Pompeo said.<\/p>\n
