The US launched airstrikes against Iran-backed militants in Syria and Iraq on Sunday in response to drone attacks against American troops and facilities in Iraq, the Pentagon said.<\/p>\n

President Biden ordered attacks on two targets in Syria and one in Iraq near the border with the two countries, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs demonstrated by this evening\u2019s strikes, President Biden has been clear that he will act to protect U.S. personnel,\u201d Kirby said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven the ongoing series<\/a> of attacks by Iran-backed groups targeting U.S. interests in Iraq, the President directed further military action to disrupt and deter such attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US was justified in the airstrikes under international law as a matter of self-defense, he stated. There was no information about the amount of people killed in the strikes, but Kirby said the president took the action under his authority \u201cto protect US personnel in Iraq\u201d in domestic law.<\/p>\n

The sites that were attacked were used for \u201coperational and weapons\u201d storage by militia groups including Kata\u2019ib Hezbollah and Kata\u2019ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, Kirby said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in Iraq at the invitation of the Government of Iraq for the sole purpose of assisting the Iraqi Security Forces in their efforts to defeat ISIS,\u201d Kirby said in the statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States took necessary, app<\/a>ropriate, and deliberate action designed to limit the risk of escalation \u2014 but also to send a clear and unambiguous deterrent message,\u201d he went on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe strikes were both necessary to address the threat and appropriately limited in scope.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Biden administration previously launched airstrikes in Syria back in February, a move that drew some criticism from some congressional Democrats in the progressive wing of the party as well as Republicans because of the lack of congressional authority for the military action. <\/p>\n

The Pentagon also said that the airstrike was also retaliatory. A rocket attack against a US base in northern Iraq killed a contractor and injured an American service member, among others. <\/p>\n

A top Iranian official said the February airstrike strengthened and expanded ISIS activity along the border. <\/p>\n

The most recent strikes come after hardliner Ebrahim Raisi was elected Iran\u2019s new president and the Biden administration House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) called the airstrikes a \u201ctargeted and proportional response\u201d to a specific threat. <\/p>\n

\u201cProtecting the military heroes who defend our freedoms is a sacred priority,\u201d Pelosi said in a statement. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Iran-backed militias utilizing these facilities have been engaged in attacks threatening U.S. servicemembers, as well as our allies.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cCongress looks forward to receiving and reviewing the formal notification of this operation under the War Powers Act and to receiving additional briefings from the Administration,\u201d she added.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
