“#Bill Bratton ‘encouraged’ by Eric Adams’ mayoral lead<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Former NYPD commissioner Bill Bratton is \u201cencouraged\u201d by Eric Adams\u2019 mayoral election lead, saying in an interview Sunday that the rest of the City Hall hopefuls hold \u201cvery questionable\u201d positions on policing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m encouraged by the potential election of Eric Adams, out of a field of candidates that were very questionable,\u201d Bratton said on WABC 770\u2019s \u201cThe Cats Roundtable,\u201d adding he disagreed with their positions on \u201cthe critical nature of police.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams, who stands 10 points above the field with just first-choice votes counted after Tuesday\u2019s primary, \u201chas made it quite clear that he intends to support the police department,\u201d Bratton told show host John\u00a0Catsimatidis. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe good news<\/a> is that at least in New York, at the top of government, there will be some sanity return,\u201d said the former police commissioner, noting that Adams\u2019 Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa also holds pro-law enforcement views. <\/p>\n

But Bratton expressed disapp<\/a>roval about the Big Apple\u2019s City Council, which he says is full of politicians who are \u201chellbent to basically screw things up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll have to keep our fingers crossed that the next mayor can basically control them,\u201d he said of the Council\u2019s 51 members.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Bratton \u2014 who has headed the NYPD twice as well as formerly leading the LAPD and Boston police department \u2014 also praised President Joe Biden, who on Wednesday released an anti-crime proposal that fit the longtime law enforcement professional\u2019s pro-cop, tough-on-crime outlook.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a comprehensive set of proposals \u2026 [that] has stopped the swing of the pendulum to the far left,\u201d said Bratton. \u201cHis debunking of defund the police, and clearly stating that his effort is to refund the police, is a promising sign.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Democratic president encouraged localities to spend part of the $350 billion of COVID stimulus funds on hiring cops.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re now providing more guidance on how they can use the $350 billion \u2026 to help reduce crime and address the root causes,\u201d Biden said last week. \u201cFor example, cities experiencing an increase in gun violence are able to use American Rescue Plan dollars to hire police officers needed for community policing and to pay their overtime.\u201d<\/p>\n
