Comedy veteran Kristen Schaal had a new experience in \u201cThe Mysterious Benedict Society.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first time I\u2019ve done something where I have other source material to pull from,\u201d Schaal, 43, told The Post, referring to the books <\/a>on which the Disney+<\/a> series<\/a> is based.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The whimsical family friendly adventure series follows four orphaned children recruited by an enigmatic boarding school known as the Institute \u2014 where a Willy Wonka-esque benefactor named Mr. Benedict (Tony Hale)<\/a> needs their help to stop \u201cThe Emergency,\u201d a global involving mass societal depression and anxiety.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Schaal and Hale are joined by a slew of eccentric staffers including Number Two (Schaal), Milligan (Ryan Hurst) and Rhonda (MaameYaa Boafo).<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved getting to read the books,\u201d Schaal said. \u201cThe fact that I was gifted with clues into who Number Two is was great. I dug in and highlighted [traits] like, \u2018Oh, she eats a lot, she never sleeps \u2014 what else!\u2019 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cRyan Hurst is so funny, and he\u2019s like a comedy nerd like me,\u201d said Schaal. \u201cSo that was a revelation. We sort of adopted Tony Hale into our family because we were filming in Canada and we weren\u2019t allowed to go back and forth [because of the pandemic]. So he spent the holidays with my family.\u201d (Schaal is married to TV writer Rich Blomquist, with whom she has a 3-year-old daughter, Ruby.) <\/p>\n

\u201cThis parallel timeline [in the show] takes place where the whole world is bracing itself for something bad to happ<\/a>en,\u201d she said. \u201cWe get into what that means\u2026but everyone is under duress in our story. And then in the real world that I was living in, everyone was under duress dealing with the pandemic. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo playing this role was really easy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Schaal\u2019s lengthy comedy resume encompasses shows aimed mostly at adult audiences \u2014 including \u201c30 Rock,\u201d \u201cBoJack Horseman\u201d and \u201cBob\u2019s Burgers\u201d \u2014 which is why \u201cThe Mysterious Benedict Society\u201d appealed to her, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of those tales where they take a special quality in kids \u2014 their innocence \u2014 and kind of make that their superpower. I thought that was really special, and it resonated with me. I like [a project] if it\u2019s unique and weird and offbeat. I once did like an indie short about a woman who falls in love with a microwave. I was like, \u2018Yes, sign me up!\u2019 I\u2019ll do anything that catches you off-guard and is surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schaal\u2019s career dates back to the late \u201990s, though there\u2019s one series for which she\u2019s most frequently recognized. <\/p>\n

\u201cSurprisingly it\u2019s \u2018Flight of the Conchords,\u2019 which is from 10 years ago, but it\u2019s never died,\u201d she said of the HBO comedy. \u201cIt\u2019s a cult thing, which is pretty cool. And when I was in Toronto a couple years ago, I got recognized for \u2018The Last Man on Earth\u2019 because it was on one of their streamers up there,\u201d she said of the Fox comedy in which she co-starred opposite Will Forte. \u201cPeople were loving it in a way that I never felt in the States. I had to e-mail the cast, like \u2018Guys, guess what \u2014 people like the show a lot up here!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always a surprise what resonates,\u201d she said. \u201cYou just don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to tickle people.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
