“#NFT of World Wide Web source code gets $2.8M bid in Sotheby’s auction<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

An NFT representing the origins of the Internet as we know it had attracted a bid of $2.8 million as of Monday morning \u2014 and may go even higher.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The digital token, called \u201cSource Code for the WWW,\u201d contains the original lines of code written by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee that created the World Wide Web.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The code includes languages and protocols like \u201cHTML\u201d and \u201cHTTP\u201d that allow sites to be displayed in a web browser. <\/p>\n

The archive is being sold in a Sotheby\u2019s online auction<\/a> that will conclude Wednesday. Forty-four bids have driven the price up from a starting $1,000 to the current $2.8 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition to 10,000 lines of code that Berners-Lee wrote in 1990 and 1991, the NFT package also contains a recent personal letter by the computer scientist reflecting on his process, as well as an animated video and digital poster representing the code.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Berners-Lee defended the sale from critics who may claim that selling a multimillion-dollar NFT does not align with the original \u201cfree and open\u201d spirit of the internet in an interview with the Guardian<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe questions I\u2019ve got, they said: \u2018Oh, that doesn\u2019t sound like the free and open web,\u2019\u201d said Berners-Lee. \u201cWell, wait a minute, the web is just as free and just as open as it always was, the core codes and protocols on the web are royalty free, just as they always have been. I\u2019m not selling the web \u2013 you won\u2019t have to start paying money to follow links.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
