Chinese regulators announced over the weekend\u00a0that Tesla would \u201crecall\u201d about 285,000 of its Model 3 and Model Y cars in the country for an online software update related to assisted driving.<\/p>\n

The so-called recall does not require drivers to return their vehicles, China\u2019s State Administration for Market Regulation said <\/a>Saturday, because it can be patched remotely through an online update.<\/p>\n

The alleged flaw led drivers to mistakenly switch on the active cruise function in their Teslas in certain situations, the SAMR said. <\/p>\n

In some situations, the alleged flaw could lead a driver\u2019s Tesla to suddenly accelerate, the SAMR added.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes as Tesla has faced mounting pressure in China amid reports of drivers losing control of their Teslas and the Chinese government restricting the use of the company\u2019s cars among state and military personnel over security concerns. <\/p>\n

Tesla\u2019s success in penetrating the Chinese market is key to the company\u2019s future, Dan Ives, managing director at Wedbush Securities, said in a note to clients. China is poised to make up 40 percent of global deliveries by next year, he said, adding that the recall \u201cis not the news<\/a> bulls want to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis recall is to address safety issues on autopilot identified by a Chinese regulator and is a\u00a0moment of truth for Tesla\u00a0which has battled the negative PR issues around autopilot in China over the last year with this recall a clear \u2018black eye moment\u2019 for Musk & Co. in this key region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, he added that the recall could be a sign Tesla is putting its public relations issues in China in the rearview mirror.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe this situation overall is a bump in the road and does not derail the near-term or long-term bull thesis for Tesla China, however going forward it needs to be a smoother road on autopilot safety otherwise the PR black cloud will continue,\u201d Ives said.<\/p>\n

Ives maintained his firm\u2019s outperform rating on Tesla and reiterated its $1,000-per-share prices target on the stock. That implies about 45 percent upside on the stock.<\/p>\n

Investors similarly appeared unbothered by the recall announcement. Shares of Tesla traded about 2.5 percent higher Monday morning in midday trading.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
