{"id":285970,"date":"2021-06-28T21:51:39","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T18:51:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/jen-psaki-defends-gwen-berry-who-turned-back-on-us-flag\/"},"modified":"2021-06-28T21:51:39","modified_gmt":"2021-06-28T18:51:39","slug":"jen-psaki-defends-gwen-berry-who-turned-back-on-us-flag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/jen-psaki-defends-gwen-berry-who-turned-back-on-us-flag\/","title":{"rendered":"#Jen Psaki defends Gwen Berry, who turned back on US flag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Jen Psaki defends Gwen Berry, who turned back on US flag<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday defended the \u201cpeaceful protest\u201d of Olympic hammer thrower Gwen Berry, who on Saturday turned away from the US flag while the national anthem played and covered her head with her T-shirt that read, \u201cActivist Athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berry said she was \u201cpissed\u201d to hear \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d after winning a bronze medal at the US Olympic Track &amp; Field Team Trials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t spoken to the president specifically about this, but I know he\u2019s incredibly proud to be an American and has great respect for the anthem and all that it represents, especially for our men and women serving in uniform all around the world,\u201d Psaki said at her daily press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>Psaki added: \u201cHe would also say, of course, that part of that pride in our country means recognizing there are moments where we are \u2014 as a country, haven\u2019t lived up to our highest ideals. The anthem doesn\u2019t speak for me. It never has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy purpose and my mission is bigger than sports,\u201d she added. \u201cI\u2019m here to represent those \u2026 who died due to systemic racism. That\u2019s the important part. That\u2019s why I\u2019m going. That\u2019s why I\u2019m here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berry said, \u201dI didn\u2019t really want to be up there \u2026 it was a setup. I was hot, I was ready to take my pictures and get into some shade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Francis Scott Key authored the patriotic song during the War of 1812 while aboard a British ship during the 1814 attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor.
