Tom Brady has found himself at the center of a new \u201cdeflategate\u201d scandal.<\/p>\n

Crypto-crazy social media<\/a> users are cheekily accusing the seven-time Super Bowl champion, who publicly embraced bitcoin in May, of deflating the digital currency \u2014 as the price of bitcoin has fallen substantially since he announced his support. <\/p>\n

The former New England Patriots quarterback, 43, edited his\u00a0Twitter\u00a0profile<\/a> picture last month to include red laser eyes, a symbol adopted by bitcoin buffs to show their enthusiasm for the cryptocurrency. <\/p>\n

But since then, the price of bitcoin has fallen almost 40 percent \u2014 from over $56,000 on the day Brady changed his picture to just over $34,600 on Monday, according to data from Coinbase.<\/p>\n

Brady himself even got in on the joke and took the blame.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlright the laser eyes didn\u2019t work. Anyone have any ideas?\u201d Brady said in response to a tweet from Jason Yanowitz, co-founder of digital asset media company Blockworks, who told the NFL icon to back off.<\/p>\n

In reality, factors beyond Brady\u2019s opinion have caused bitcoin to tumble from its all-time high of almost $65,000 in April, including regulatory scrutiny from governments worldwide and questions about the environmental impact of bitcoin mining.<\/p>\n

At the\u00a0CoinDesk Consensus 2021 forum<\/a> in May, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers star said that he had purchased some crypto assets and was\u00a0a \u201cbig believer\u201d in the sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world is changing, we all just have to understand it\u2019s constant change and you can either be ahead of the curve or behind it and I\u2019m choosing to be ahead of it,\u201d Brady said at the event. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs someone who wants to be on the forefront of things, I\u2019m going to help create the trend and adopt it and recognize this is where the world is heading.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
