Wrestling bombshell Nikki Bella is apologizing for offensive comments she once made about the late ring legend Joanie \u201cChyna\u201d Laurer.<\/p>\n

Laurer \u2014 the first woman to win WWE\u2019s Intercontinental championship \u2014 died of an overdose in 2016 after a protracted public downfall at 46. However, at her peak, the muscular champion was known around the globe as \u201cThe Ninth Wonder of the World.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her loyal fans are now calling out a resurfaced clip<\/a> from a 2013 app<\/a>earance by the Bella Twins \u2014 wrestling\/realty TV duo Nikki and Brie Bella \u2014 on \u201cFashion Police,\u201d then hosted by comedy legend Joan Rivers.<\/p>\n

During the interview, the Bellas were asked to comment on Laurer\u2019s looks, claiming they \u201cdon\u2019t know if it\u2019s a man or a woman,\u201d said Nikki, now 37, referring to Chyna \u2014 a woman. <\/p>\n

To make matters worse, Rivers \u2014\u00a0who died at 81 in 2014 \u2014 piled on the late Laurer, saying her \u201cvagina has a penis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans were quick to denounce the \u201cdisrespectful\u201d language aimed at a cult icon who\u2019s abusive early life, groundbreaking career and tragic spiral is explored in a new documentary on VICE TV.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah this is messed up \u2026 Poor Chyna,\u201d the fan captioned the video.<\/p>\n

The official account for Laurer responded to the resurfaced interview in a since-deleted tweet, according to celebrity gossip site Too Fab<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat video from the @BellaTwins is disrespectful. Chyna would of been hurt by this. But we will just show love. I just hope they are sorry. We will run this page and campaign with light not hate,\u201d they wrote. An additional response<\/a> to the thread on Sunday added, \u201cNo itvwa [sic] disrespectful period!!\u201d <\/p>\n

Nikki issued her mea culpa<\/a> via the Bella Twins\u2019 official social media<\/a> account Monday, after the controversial tweet<\/a> had racked up more than 700 likes. <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to sincerely apologize for a comment I made over 8 years ago on Fashion Police. I am sorry and embarrassed by my 29 year old self, who offended Chyna and, in turn, hurt her family and others,\u201d Nikki wrote<\/a> in a smartphone note attached to the tweet, which has seen 1,300 supporters so far. \u201cI wish I could take it back. Please learn from me, it\u2019s not worth hurting someone\u2019s feelings for a meaningless laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cChyna will always be remembered as an icon and pioneer who helped create the opportunities for women in wrestling that exist today. Thank you Chyna!\u201d<\/p>\n

Laurer debuted in WWE as Chyna in 1997 as the bodyguard for eventual boyfriend \u2014 and later ex \u2014 Paul \u201cTrip<\/a>le H\u201d Levesque. She went on to become a vital member of the legendary D-Generation X faction before making a name for herself as an in-ring performer unlike any seen before in WWE, as she often wrestled the male superstars. She became the first woman to enter the Royal Rumble, a WWE women\u2019s champion and infamously posed for Playboy.<\/p>\n

Her contract was not renewed by WWE in 2001\u00a0and the franchise distanced itself from Laurer for many years as she dabbled in reality TV, entered the adult film industry and battled substance abuse \u2014\u00a0before leaving the country to start a new life.<\/p>\n

VICE TV\u2019s new two-hour documentary \u201cVICE VERSA: Chyna\u201d revolves around the final year of Laurer\u2019s life. She returned to the US in 2015 after three quiet years in Japan \u2014 during which she was an English teacher \u2014 with the intent to make a documentary. Her inner circle now hopes the film will fuel a long-overdue solo induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
