Call it the shut your \u201ctrap.\u201d <\/p>\n

International researchers have come under fire over a controversial new dental device that purports to muzzle obesity by literally sealing people\u2019s mouths shut. The inflammatory fat-fighting contraption, dubbed the DentalSlim Diet Control, was detailed in a Friday study in the journal Nature.<\/a><\/p>\n

Billed as the<\/a> \u201cworld-first weight-loss device to help fight the global obesity epidemic,\u201d the DentalSlim Diet Control its fitted by a dentist to the patient\u2019s upper and lower back teeth. Its intricate system of magnets and custom-made bolts allows wearers to open their mouths only about 1\/16 of an inch, which relegates them to a liquid diet without restricting their talking or breathing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a non-invasive, reversible, economical and attractive alternative to surgical procedures,\u201d Professor Paul Brunton, pro-vice-chancellor at the New Zealand University of Otago\u2019s Division of Health Science<\/a>s, said in a press release<\/a> from the university, which developed the unconventional snack safe in conjunction with British scientists. <\/p>\n

And it app<\/a>ears the scientists are putting their money where people\u2019s mouths are. A trial based in Dunedin, New Zealand, claimed users shed an average of 14 pounds in two weeks and \u201cwere motivated to continue with their weight loss journey,\u201d per the press release. <\/p>\n

\u201cOverall, people felt better about themselves, they had more confidence and they were committed to their weight-loss journey,\u201d Brunton added.<\/p>\n

Best of all, in the event of an emergency \u2014 or perhaps an extra-special cheat night \u2014 the blubber-battling braces can be released via a special tool. They can also be repeatedly installed and taken out at the user\u2019s discretion. <\/p>\n

However, despite Brunton\u2019s claim that the DSDC had no \u201cadverse consequences,\u201d female participants in the study reported that the molar muzzle left them uncomfortable and unable to speak with a sense that \u201clife, in general<\/a>, was less satisfying,\u201d the Mirror reported.<\/a><\/p>\n

Many social media<\/a> users were none too pleased about the idea of putting one\u2019s chompers under house arrest. \u201cAnd this, kids, is why ethics needs to be taught in science,\u201d wrote one aghast critic<\/a> of the gastrointestinal gulag. \u201cGood God, I thought medicine was past these kinds of torture devices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another skeptic surmised <\/a>that if someone vomited while wearing the DSDC they would \u201cchoke to death or aspirate.\u201d They added that the literal lockjaw was bad for \u201cdental hygiene,\u201d as it inhibited brushing and flossing. <\/p>\n

However, Brunton insisted that the dental device was not a cure-all for corpulence but, rather, one component in a \u201cphased approach to weight loss supported by advice from a dietician allowing long-term weight loss goals to be realized.\u201d<\/p>\n

The diet enforcer is \u201cparticularly helpful for those having to lose weight before they can undergo surgery, and for diabetes patients for whom weight loss could initiate remission,\u201d per the press release. <\/p>\n

Recent studies revealed that 1.9 billion adults worldwide are overweight with 650 million qualifying as obese, WHO reported.<\/a>\n <\/div>\n
