Tourists visiting Times Square on Monday expressed fears for their safety \u2014 and the city\u2019s future \u2014 following the second shooting there in as many months.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorrying about getting killed in a crossfire was not on my itinerary when I booked this trip<\/a> with my girlfriends \u2014 especially while touring the biggest attraction,\u201d said Pat Flanagan of Cleveland.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s actually more sad than scary because I want to see New York pick up again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Flanagan, 44, added: \u201cCrime can be controlled if you control it. New York learned how to do it in the past, so why not now? It\u2019s got the biggest police department in the country and it can\u2019t stop people from firing guns in Times Square?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, tourism is making a comeback after COVID,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t kill it by letting crime run rampant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Retired teacher Arthur Escalera of Harrisburg, Penn., who was vacationing with his wife, said Sunday\u2019s shooting made it seem like \u201cyou\u2019re in a city that\u2019s lost the power to police itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe remember Times Square the way it was in the \u201870s and \u201880s, and if we had tickets to a Broadway show we would consider it a sort of walk on the wild side to walk down 42nd Street at night,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we never feared for our lives. Getting mugged was a fear, but death by a stray bullet? Never.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meghan Nash, a dental hygienist from Charlotte, N.C. \u2014 who\u2019s staying at a Hampton Inn just blocks from the scene of Sunday\u2019s shooting \u2014 was unaware of the incident until learning about it from a reporter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s insane. That\u2019s really terrible,\u201d said Nash, 30.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew crime was up but I didn\u2019t think things had gotten so bad that people were firing guns in Times Square.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nash added, \u201cI probably would have picked a different destination. I really just wanted to have fun, not worry about getting randomly killed by a stray bullet.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
