“#\u2018Many Saints of Newark\u2019 trailer is glimpse into ‘Sopranos’ prequel<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Those who want respect, give respect. And those who want to see Tony Soprano again now can with the release of a new trailer for \u201cThe Many Saints of Newark.\u201d <\/p>\n

The film, a prequel to the HBO series<\/a> \u201cThe Sopranos,\u201d focuses on teenage Tony played by Michael Gandolfini, the son of late \u201cSopranos\u201d star James Gandolfini, who died in 2013.<\/p>\n

The trailer<\/a>, which dropped on Tuesday, spotlights the young Tony and his relationship with Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola), the father of Christopher Moltisanti, played by Michael Imperioli in the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Many Saints of Newark,\u201d which recently saw its release date pushed back one week, is written by the show\u2019s original creator, David Chase, and Lawrence Konner and directed by \u201cSopranos\u201d veteran Alan Taylor. The film is set during the Newark riots, during which rival gangsters challenged the powerful DiMeo crime family\u2019s hold over the territory.<\/p>\n

The cast also includes Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, Michela De Rossi, John Magaro, Ray Liotta and Vera Farmiga. Michael Gandolfini, 22, famously never even watched his dad\u2019s legendary show<\/a>\u00a0until he was fittingly cast in this prequel.<\/p>\n

The two-minute trailer opens with James Gandolfini\u2019s narration as the older Tony says, \u201cWhen I was a kid, guys like me were brought up to follow codes.\u201d The younger Tony, standing at a phone booth, reveals his harsh temper by beating up a friend before the screen turns black.<\/p>\n

The scene cuts to Tony\u2019s school, where a middle-aged Livia Soprano, played by Vera Farmiga, sits with a school guidance counselor to talk about her son Tony\u2019s grades.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the basis of the Stanford-Binet, he\u2019s high IQ,\u201d the guidance counselor quips.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t prove it by me, he\u2019s got a D-plus average,\u201d Livia says.<\/p>\n

Dickie, played by Alessandro Nivola, mentors his nephew Tony in the trailer, offering Tony some speakers as a gift \u2014 except they\u2019re stolen. After an intense montage featuring guns and fire, Tony fears that accepting the stolen speakers will damage his shot at attending college.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou take the speakers, right. At the same time, you say to yourself \u2018This is the last time I\u2019m ever going to steal something,’\u201d says Dickie. \u201cIt\u2019s that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dickie, who struggles to manage his professional and personal responsibilities, helps make the young Tony into the mob boss that long-time \u201cSopranos\u201d fans know. The trailer alludes to Dickie\u2019s powerful influence over his nephew with the line, \u201cAs far as your nephew goes\u2026 stay out of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trailer features a cover of Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cGotta Serve Somebody,\u201d which includes the fitting lyric, \u201cWell, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord, but you\u2019re gonna have to serve somebody.\u201d The show\u2019s original theme<\/a>, \u201cWoke Up This Morning\u201d by Alabama 3, also makes a quick appearance.<\/p>\n

The action-packed trailer was presented with the tagline, \u201cLegends aren\u2019t born, they\u2019re made.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Sopranos\u201d debuted in 1999 on HBO, ran for six seasons before concluding with an infamous cut to black. James Gandolfini won three Emmys for his role as the New Jersey mob boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Many Saints of Newark\u201d\u00a0will be in theaters starting on Oct. 1 and on HBO Max for 31 days following theatrical release.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
